Another 444 question
« on: August 20, 2010, 04:00:36 PM »
My brother brought me 50 of the 225 gr ftx bullets from Hornady. I was wondering if any one had tried them out with the 444 yet? I think those pointy little bullets will dump a deer in its tracks. Havent found any data that will transfer over. What do y'all think of this idea? I'm thinking its gonna work like a charm. Feel free to offer opinions.

The 225gr is made for the 44mag, at 444 velocities, it will grenade unless you use it only for longer ranges. Use the 265gr FTX in the 444.

I know the 225 was engineered to perform at 44 mag velocity, but also consider the number of 240 grain bullets that are also engineered to perform at 44 mag velocities. I am not disputing this fact. I also anticipate using this at ranges at least 100 yards from the muzzle. I also expect that it will be used out to a fuzz past 200. I think it will work fine at those ranges. But I also beleive it will perform as well as a 240 grain 44 mag bullet at ranges inside 100 yards as well. I do appreciate your input. Good Lord willing and I can find a deer dumb enough to walk out in front of me I will have some terminal ballistic input to offer. You present a valid point, and your input will be considered and researched further. Thanks.

Ok,just looked at Hornady website and they recommend a velocity spread between 800 and 2100 fps for this bullet. But I also noticed the BC of this bullet is RATHER low, lower than I had anticipated. So the trade off may not be worth it. I'll have to crunch numbers,,,,,,,GRRRRRRRRRR

The 225 FTX is to soft for the 444, listen to Tim.  If ya just want some trigger time or load them down to about 2000 FPS they will be good for ya.  DP

Those 225gr flextips would make a great varmint projectile at the velocities that the 444 could push them too.   Fragging is what you want with such small critters.
