7mm-08
« on: August 20, 2010, 02:47:29 AM »
What are your thought on the 7-08. It will be used for deer only. I will reload for it. have a 243 and 270 so was thinking of it as something in between with regards to recoil and power.  What bullets have been used with success. Thinking of the getting a barrel fit to my receiver from h&r anyone with one and how does it shoot.

Probably my favorite caliber. I have one in a Browning BLR lever action. Shoots really nice with less recoil than I expected. There is no "perfect" deer caliber...that being said the 7-08 is the perfect deer caliber. I don't load for it yet but probably will load for it down the road. I use standard Remington Core-lokt loads in 140gr. No need for anything else.

Have owned two rifles in 7mm-08 and have friends that still own them. Fantastic round with the 139-140 gr bullets.

I'm a 270 fan, but the 7-08 is real close, love the round, shot my 11 point with one..

The 7-08 is just another cartridge.  Other similar ones will do the same things.   The 308 is more popular but get what you want and make it work.

I have no idea what H&R your talking about?   Why fit a barrel to it when you seem to have a barrel now?

It's like the 308, works great and with the right bullet could take anything in the lower 48 cleanly.  Like it so much I have 5 of em in my house.  139-140 is about perfect for deer, and ya don't need a "premium" bullet for deer.  DP

I prefer the the 162 gr. Hornady BTSP.  It doesn't blood shot as bad as the 139's and still has good trajectory.

I prefer short cartridges, you dont give up much in the way of velocity but I think theyre more accurate. been a .243 fan for years but since went to the 7-08 because I handload.
I like the 120 gr in the 7-08, without effort Im getting 3100+ fps out of mine. Talk about a flat shooting round.

7mm-08 should be about "ideal" for deer.  The 7X57 is equally suited and historically more of a classic.  But the 7-08 is all you need, perhaps more available over the counter, and a terrific choice for deer, antelope, and black bear.

put a scope on it that will get you out to 400+ yards and when you see what it can do with a few pounds less in weight, shorter barrel, less recoil and less powder you will love it. I have a Tikka T3 lite and have it dialed in right now to shoot flat out to 300 yards witha 140 gr bullet. Once I start to handload I will move up in a scope that can get me to 400+ yards. not bad for a 7lb rifle & scope w/ a 22" barrel.

Just my opinion, but I think the 7mm-08 is one of the best choices for deer - mild recoil with plenty of wallop and range.

Of course you can get the same things with a .257 Roberts through a .270 Win. and .280 Rem.
