New "to me" oddball .223 Pictures added!
« on: August 19, 2010, 09:51:44 AM »
I just picked up the .223 I got off Gunbroker today. It is a 22" Stainless bull barrel .223 with a 1-12 twist, and a black looking wood stock. I was a little surprised with the bull barrel when I picked it up. What is really promising is that I can touch the lands with my all time favorite bullet the Hornady 50 grain SX flat base and another favorite the 60 grain flat base Hornady hp. The frame is an HJ so I suppose that is just the way they were. Could this be old enough that it is a Green Mountain SS blank, or is that just an internet rumor? I just checked the 52 grain Berger and they too will touch the lands. The 62 grain Berger flat base match bullet of coarse will touch and it actually protrudes in the case like the 60 grain Hornady bullet. I also just did a search on the net and here and all I have read say they don't exist. Could this have been a Talo gun or similar? I think I will have to break out some Lapua brass and see how it will shoot.

I'm working on that. I don't know if I will be able to get an accurate color on the stock though. On gunbroker it was advertised as black, but to me it is a gray-black? It is a checkered stock and forend, but I think it is just birch under the stain. I will try to update with photos this after noon. Well lets try this.   www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Viewitem.aspx?Item=181983062

Nice find, with a nice price. Those stocks look really cool close up.

I had one exactly like that. It was an Ebony stained wood with checkering with a stainless receiver and barrel in .223  1-12 twist. I thought whoever traded it in at my local gun shop had tried to stain it but maybe not. Mine was kinda beat up and dirty from riding in somebody's truck but it cleaned  up nice. I sanded the stock down and sprayed it with bedliner. Looked better than new when I got done with it.
Mine was an excellent shooter and took 3 coyotes this past winter from 20 to 182 yards. I sold mine to a guy I work with and he liked it so much that he bought another one from Dicks for his son. I think bedliner makes an ugly piece of wood look pretty good as I have done a few Chinese air rifles with it too.

I had just never seen a stainless bull barreled .223. I am kind of leaning to the gray laminate from Gunstocks inc. It looks like you polished out the barrel also. I really like the way the polished stainless looks. To me ebony would most likely be the closest wood stain to match. It must have had a trigger job done also, because it is about 3 1/4 lbs.

Moorepower, congratulations on your new Handi. You are going to love the .223, it's a great cartridge. Fun to shoot, relativly cheap to shoot, accurate, & really does unspeakable things to pests.
