Can another brand shotgun stock be modified to fit a Handi?
« on: August 19, 2010, 06:47:47 AM »
Guys,

Has anyone tried to modify a different brand shotgun stock to fit a Handi rifle?  I've looked at pictures of Mossberg and Remington shotgun stocks, and they look as though they could be made to fit a Handi rifle.  I ran a search on this forum, but didn't find anything.

I've seen some nice looking walnut stocks and some neat colored laminate stocks and figured if they could be made to fit a Handi, that would be easier than carving a stock from a blank.

Thanks.

Eric

Are ya any good at carving?
Do you have a good drill press and long bits?

You could make a stock out of a piece of cord-wood if you have the skills. Coming from a background of Traditional Muzzle Loading and having done more than just a few "kit's", I can tell ya that the results can be very rewarding.
While it's not really Labor intensive, stock work takes many, many hours.

With the hours involved, it's rarely advantageous to pay someone to fit a stock that is prioritized to another make an model.

I bought and final-fitted a gunstocksinc forearm then made one out of a table leg, just to see if I could. More hours of Handi-fun.

Guys,

Thanks for the responses.  Yes, I know it takes many hours to carve a stock from a blank.  Does anyone know if there is one brand (say, Mossberg?) of shotgun stock that can easily be modified to fit a Handi rifle?  And  by that I mean just caving the neck of the stock so it fits the receiver?  Thanks.

www.gunstocksinc.com is where I would go. The chore would be finishing rather than fitting.

I have cut up a Ruger 10/22 stock and almost made a nice buttstock and forearm out of it. The forearm is quite nice, with the barrel band of course. I could not wait to get the proper long bit I needed to drill through the buttstock completely and used the wrong tool  :'( :'( :'( . I ended up drilling out through the side of the stock and converted that into a pistol grip for a Handi, only to be used with a 22" or longer barrel for legalities. I sent it to a member and he has used it for a while and is now sending it back to me. He really wants a synthetic Choate style pistol grip. As soon as I get it it has a reciever that is waiting for it to go on. Yes it can be done, but don't rush and be sure to use the correct bits and tools....<><....:)

MSP ret,

Thanks for the info.  That is exactly what I was looking for:  a brand of stock I could modify to fit a Handi.  Thanks!

I took a mossberrg 500 stock and fit it to an old Topper 88 I had.  I just kept grinding with the dremel and fitting it until it was snug.  Came out pretty good in my opinion.  Took some rustoleum textured paint and painted the buttstock and forend with it.  Sold it a while back on here.  Kinda wish I had kept the gun but need the money at the time.
