.204 Ultra trouble.
« on: August 19, 2010, 02:56:06 AM »
Have a .204 Ultra. It has NEVER been accurate. Now I'm having light primer strikes on Hornady ammo. Shot 4 rounds then has failed to fire anymore Hornady rounds. It did seem to shoot some Winchester ok (that was before I tried the Hornadys), however the Winchesters were not accurate either. 2-4" at 100 yards. How do I go about fixing the light primer strikes? Just pulling my hair out over this H-R. That said I've been having terrific luck with my 20 gauge Ultra Slug. Shot a 3 15/16" group (3 shots) at a measured 175 yards this past weekend with Winchester 2 3/4" Dual Bonds.

First, have you checked to see if your mount and rings are tight?  That could cause a decrease in accuracy.  After your rifle failed to fire the hornady ammo did you try another type to see if the same thing happened to that?  Last what kind of a scope are you using?
I have a 223 ultra that gave me nothing but problems until i found an ammo type that it really liked.  It shoots WWB 45gr hp into a 3/4" group at 100yds consistently.  I tried hornady 40gr and 55gr, remington 55gr fmj and 55gr corelokts.  Then i had trouble with a scope that had a wandering zero.  It was replaced with a nikon buckmaster from a rifle that i sold so now it is my go to varmint rifle.  I love it.

I had the same problem with FTFs in a 204 Ultra that I sold my friend.
It had always worked fine all the time I had it but soon after he got it it started to FTF.
I posted the same question as you not to long a go and it was suggested to replace the hammer spring.
Another member sent me one along with his slave pin he had made to hold everything in line when you re-install the trigger works.
I did the job myself, it was pretty easy.
That seemed to do the trick.
I couldn't see a difference in the two springs but the factory one must have become weak.
I have since gotten the gun back on a trade and use it almost every weekend with out a single FTF.
It has had over 80 rounds since the fix and still going strong.
Several members have had the same problem.

As far as accuracy goes, that will be a trial and error thing.
I have had several 204 Handis and all were very accurate.
So far all have liked the Hornaday 32gr VMAX ammo and two liked the Hornaday 45gr SP also.
I know some have said theirs didn't like the Hornaday ammo but all of mine has.

Hope you get it figured out.

The base and ring screws are tight. The scope is a Weaver that I am unhappy with for other reasons. Taking the frame apart scare the heck out of me. Someone else did suggest a hammer spring. Maybe that's what it is?

R&Ring the trigger and hammer group is scary at first, but it really isn't that hard at all when you know how to do it, see the trigger hone info by Perko and Raynor in the FAQs, a slave pin and a wood wedge will make reassembly a breeze.  ;)
