Two new (to me) Handis
« on: August 18, 2010, 04:52:06 PM »
Got to shoot my new 223 bull barrel today, and it's gonna be a shooter.  I had a couple boxes of my Dad's reloads left from 20+ years ago, one box of 70 gr. and one box loaded with 53gr. match hollow points.  I got on paper and fired a few of the 70's.  Acceptable but not good.  I then fired 3 of the 53's.  Had a 3/8 group at 25  yds.  I'll get out this weekend and do a real test with some fresh loads at 100 yds.

I also just came upon a 280 ultra with a 26" barrel.  I don't have all my stuff on hand to load yet, so I bought a box of Rem green box, 165 gr.  This rifle is impressive!  I've never shot a 280 and didn't know what to think, but this gun really launches one without killing on the other end.

This too will get some load work up, and probably remain in the Handi Harem.

Wonder what caliber I need next?

Kinda makes me wish I'd hung on to that 223 barrel.  You will love the 280.  Mine is a deer killing machine.  I use the 139 gr Hornady flat base bullets and H414 powder.  It is accurate and drops Bambi in his tracks.  The 7mm kills all out of proportion to it's paper ballistics.  Mine likes loads that are a bit below max in the loadbooks.  You may also want to try hornady 60 gr flat base bullets in that 223.  They are heavy enough to buck the wind a bit better than the lighter pills, and are short enough to stabilize in a 1-12 twist most of the time.

Thanks Geezer,

I won't get to load for a few days, my kids are coming to visit from PA for a couple weeks....I've got a lot of .224 bullets, several hundred of  the 53 gr. match, some 55 spitzers, some 60gr. and a box marked "super explosive" in 70 gr.  Don't know for sure what those are, but I'll give 'em a go anyway.....

Got some dies ordered for the 280, should be here in a couple days.  I'm looking forward to working up loads for this, I believe it will be a valuable addition to my deerslaying arsenal! ;D

That 223 will be my primary paper/coyote puncher.

The .280 is on my want list.  I had a buddy's here for a while with accuracy problems.  I dropped an "O" ring on the front stud and end of problem.  It is a nice, lethal shooter.  When he picked it up, he rang the 300 yard gong 6 out of 6 times.  Do I need it?....No., but I want it.  It's just the disease.  Thanks, Tim.
