30-06 Question?
« on: August 17, 2010, 01:27:19 PM »
Hi All,

Did H&R  ever make a 24" or 26" Handi 30-06 barrel?  I wish old Steve didn't have all those cartridge drawings online. :P

The Ultracomps were a little longer, but only because of the brake, other than that the 30-06 has only been made in a 22" barrel. You can always have a 25-06 barrel bored out or a stub barrel made if you want a 26" barrel, Wayne will do either for about $350.

Thanks Tim, I guess I should have asked the question for a 30 cal rifle, not a 30-06.  Maybe a 308 @ 24 inches?

Seems to me that Dick's offers 24" bull barrels on their camo Handis and one of em is 308, but I don't know what chamberings the longer barrels come in, I've only see them on the rack, 223 and 22-250 as well. Otherwise, unless maybe they had a one-off like Shaner's 24" bull barrel Hornet, that's it.

Or....do a stub barrel and have your pick of caliber AND barrel length.  ;D ;D 8)

The overall length of a Handi with a 28" barrel is about the same length as a bolt gun with a 22"... roughly.

The heck of it is ALL barrels start out as a 36" blank, there have been more than a couple discussions on wanting longer barrels, but H&R is adamant that 22" barrels are the most popular and fail to get the message that longer barrels would sell if they just offered them.  :-\

Wish they would offer that 24" stainless 45-70 as an accessory!  Talked to customer service yesterday and they said they don't/won't.  >:( >:(

All the automated barrel producing machinery is set-up for handling 22" barrels most likely and I don't know at what point in the process the barrel gets rifled.  It may not be cost effective to muck about changing the settings or mayber the machinery can't be changed.  There is a lot more to the NEF barrel making process than just chopping off the barrel at whatever length you happen to like.

If Rem offered different barrel lengths in their accessory program it would quickly tell them WHAT barrel length for what caliber is the most popular.  Trying to convince them to do it is the major fly in the pie.

I like long barrels and squeal like a stuck pig when people chop them off, because I know just how much velocity is lost between a 22-26" barrel and a 16" barrel, depending on the caliber as to the amount of loss per inch...BUT...In all reality, as far as hunting goes, a 22" barrel is a very good compromize...you don't loose too much velocity in any of the calibers and 22" is a very popular barrel length across the board in many non-magnum bolt guns.

A stub barrel or ANY barrel change isn't all that cost effective when considering the overall economy of the Handi unless you can do the work yourself...and even then the rough cost figure runs $150 - $250 for the least expensive A&B Midway or McGowen barrel and reamer rental, and that doesn't even count needing a donor barrel for the stub receiver. Kinda like trying to turn a VW into a Maserati by hanging a set of pipes on it and painting it red.  ;D.

But it's all fun.
