Manners
« on: August 15, 2010, 01:10:45 PM »
You people here have no concept of how nice you are to converse with. I have been to many sites this weekend looking for various bits of information that I thought more readily available there. Almost without exception the inhabitants thereof were of the opinion that if you did not have an "XYZ" you were wasting your time and on the way to becoming a total loser, not only that, but if you could not afford an "XYZ" you were such a loser that perhaps you really did not deserve to have a gun, and should have to beat game to death with a tennis racket.
The more I am here, the better I feel. Being polite should not be an "extra". Here it is "included". Thanks guys. Pardon my rant.

This particular section of GBO has by far the nicest group of people I've ever come across on any internet forum.

You couldn't have said it better.  These folks are the best group I've ever encountered on the internet.  It's not just manners or politeness, everyone here WORKS to help fellow members.  I've met several members socially and they are as fine in person as on this website.  We've done some marvelous and special things here, and I'm proud to call myself a member.  Not to slam any of you younger guys, but I believe also that since a lot of us are older, it's a reflection of the courtesy and respect instilled in us as youngsters.  That seems to not happen anymore...

Another aspect of it, I believe, is that the Handi Rifle is a simple, basic tool, appealing to no frills folks who are self confident and self reliant.  Again, a product of their upbringing.

I was a teenager during the 50s....Happy Days...and they were.....the best years of my lifetime.  In town, after supper people would go for a stroll, and be invited onto a neighbor's front porch for a visit, an iced tea, or a beer.  We knew our neighbors and they were friends.  Kids sat and behaved themselves, spoke when talked to and yes ma'med and yes sired.  Well, most of the front porches are gone along with respect.

There is a lot of good people here, most will go out of their way to help a guy out.  I feel very lucky, to be a part of this family and hope I get to meet more of them in the years to come.  The information and kidding that comes from these guys really lightens my load at the end of the day.  For that I am very grateful.  Yes sir, there are manners here, along with people that care for their fellow man.  DP

Man, 26, 29, I can't even remember back that far!  :D
It's good to see that some of the youngsters were brought up the right way.
My respect to you all and the parents that set you along that path of righteousness.
It just goes to show that there is still some good in the younger generation, of which I was once a small part of, a long time ago.  ;)

Many forums/boards are chock full of "experts".  ;)

Just read threads on optics - "If it ain't a Leupold, it ain't a scope".

And rifles - "If you don't own a Remington, you don't have a REAL rifle".

Reloading - "Lee products are cheap junk-you better get RCBS/Lyman/Dillon/etc.".

You get the idea........

There doesn't seem to be any of that going on here, which is great!

Most of the "experts" here truely are experts and willing to help and not be pompous about it.

I like that.

I've long considered courtesy and respect to be important survival skills. Sure, in our society today you can get away with being a jerk most of the time (and maybe that's a good thing in a way). But it wasn't always the case, and it isn't the case everywhere, even now. I'm glad there are some places where people haven't given up the habit.
"Our knowledge increases each year. Yet what we know is as trivial as a whisper in a vast desert."
