Loads for 3006... what are you having the best luck with?
« on: August 10, 2010, 03:25:07 PM »
Friend of mine picked up a used H&R in 3006. What loads are you having the best luck with?

Thanks

Lots of things work in the .30-06.

Try anybody's 150 grain bullet and 49 grains of IMR 4895.  That's an old load, useful in lots of rifles.

Or, try the 150 Nosler Ballistic Tip with 61 grains of Reloder 19.

Or, the 155 Hornady A-Max with 60 grains of Reloder 22.

Or, the 168 grain SMK with 60 grains of Reloder 22.

Someone will be along shortly with more recipes.  I'd offer some 4350 recipes, but I've never used the powder.

I've always had good luck with a 165 gr. bullet and a reasonable amount of IMR 4350.  Can't remember the exact amt, well below max, and don't have my notes handy.   :-\  However, the last time this subject came up many other folk used about the same load.   ;D

I'm using a bullet that some might consider an antique, but they still perform with the best. It's the Remington 180gr RN Core Lock. This bullet will penitrate & not blow up, it's as good as some premium bullets. "The deadliest mushroom in the woods" isn't just Remington hype, they work. I use a near max load of IMR4350.  ;)

Almost anything I put in it does well.  My favorite loads are either Reloader 22, gives the highest velocity, and Winchester factory duplication loads, using Winchester 460.  I use mostly Nosler Bullets, but Sierria 165gr HPBT, and Speer 125gr TNT work well also.  The Sieria 165gr HPBT bullet in front of Reloader 22 is my long range favorite.

Not a Handi, but my 30-06 Savage barrel likes just about any 180 gr, Hornady's the best and H4350 or RL-19, loaded touching the lands at max pressures...a little to hot for the Handi I think.

Work up slow...max accuracy usually comes just below max pressure levels.  All my rifles from about 7mm up like the bullet touching or into the lands for the most part.

Load safely.

220 grain sierra, 51 gr h4350 for about 2400 fps has some serious smack to it. accurate too. i know some of you will think this is old fashioned but i want to hit them in the eye and exit at that hole at the other end. most of you guys probably don't need a load like this but i live north of 60 and it gives me a bit of security, if only in my own mind.

I don't have a handi, but my Savage loves the 165 gn Sierra SPBT over a max load of H414 (I believe 56 gns).  I haven't chrono'd it, but according to the Lee manual, the velocity is right at 2900 fps.  Shoots sub MOA (when I do my part), and has accounted for 7 one shot kills on whitetails.

I have loaded 200, 220, and 250gr bullets.  While they are great for up close and personel loads, they just don't have any range.  A lot of my hunting is done above treeline.  Up there you can see a long ways off, but so can the game.  Sometimes you can get to within 300 to 400 yards, and that's it.  Other times you have to make a 500 yard, or longer shot.  Therefore 180gr is the heaviest bullet I load for my 06s.

There are a lot of ideas floating about as to which bullet/weight is the "best".  I've let my fingers walk through the balistics tables to get an idea as to which weight is the best "compromise" because ALL bullet shapes and sizes are compromises in some way.

I like a heavy bullet for caliber with a high BC...not the heaviest but one near the top of the weight range.  Most of the time you can get a high enough muzzle velocity where a high BC bullet will end up with more energy at the longer range than a bullet with a lower BC bullet that starts out faster.

But it depends on the range you expect your game to be killed at, the design of the bullet, how you hold your mouth when you pull the trigger and all the other nuances that enter into the picture that most people never ever think about.

I think the '06 does it's best work with 175-200 gr bullets and that is the weight range I pick.  H4350, RL-19 and 22 and N-204 all seem to produce the highest velocities and any brand bullet...some do better than others in the accuracy department, but you have to work that out for yourself and what your rifle likes.

SMK's almost always are the top dogs for accuracy and target work, GK's for game, Parts and Accubonds always do well...sometime's it just what's on sale. ;D

I don't recall an 06 load that didn't shoot real good. IMR 4895 to H 414 to IMR 4350. Any good bullet.
