Front sight ramp mounting screw?
« on: August 04, 2010, 06:48:03 PM »
I ordered a williams shorty ramp for my 45-70. The mounting  screw that came with the ramp is to large in diameter for the front sight mounting hole in the barrel. The screw from the factory h&r sight that I took off is to long & the head is to thick, stands to proud above the ramp to install the dovetail fire sight.
I read in faq that h&r changed to a smaller 3-48 screw some time back.  And that it was ''adequate but not ideal'' for mounting the ramp.
Where can I get a screw that mounts the ramp. Or do i just need to take it to a gunsmith?

You need to find out just what the screw that fits is.  I have seen #6, #5, #4 and 3's in front sights.  Larry

Since the shorty ramp comes with a 6-48 screw, I'd just have the barrel drilled and tapped 6-48 and you'll be good to go, that would be the best choice IMO, a different 3-48 screw would work, but as said, it's certainly not ideal.  ;)
