Hello everyone,

I have been away for a while but now have some cool news to share. I am organizing the first annual Hunting Rifle Invitational Shoot at my home range here in Georgia to see who really does possess an "accurate" hunting rifle. These will be shooters I have come to know and respect from the time I was a small child as well as some guys who I have only recently met who have a local reputation for being able to pull off the remarkable shots. All rifles shot will be hunting rifles. No bench guns or competition rifles will be in the contest, although they will be able to show their skills individually. I will be certifying accuracy in a very simple way, one shot to hit a 8" plate at 100, 200, 300, and 500 yards. The farthest hit will be their "certified accuracy mark". I know a few guys who will likely hit the far plate, but I am curious to see how many will even attempt such a distance. We will also be playing a poker hand with 10 shooters each shooting 5 cards stapled to the board to make their hand. The last two will be wild, leading to an interesting card game.
I will be bringing my .308 Ultra out of semi-retirement to play on that day. I already have the match handloaded 168 gr. Sierras that have proven to be accurate at long range. I will also bring out Brutus. He is my .45/70 Handi that has chosen the 350 gr. JSP as his favorite load. I have posted pics of the 1/2 " 100 yard groups here before and am looking forward to ringing the bell at the 500 yard mark. Of course I do have the home range advantage, but a truly accurate rifle will perform well anywhere. I am sure that a few UZI's and AR's will play for fun as well as a few trick shots from my S.W.A.T. guests. One practical trick shot that still amazes me is shooting a helium baloon being pulled around by a remote controlled truck, simulating a running head target. But, this is mainly a hunting rifle shoot. So, if you guys have any ideas on how to make this event the best it can be, please feel free to give advice. Words of encouragement for the old ugly boat paddle push button single shots are always welcome. I am sure that most rifles that will shoot that day will cost way more than my singles, but hey, when you have a true shooting rifle, the target does not ask for an appraisal. Thanks for reading, and God Bless You All.

I don't.  Youze guys gots snakes n' gators dere.  Dis dumb Yankee's stayin home.  Seriously, it would be a neat thing to do.....perhaps a little far away, but nice.  We're doing the Tom Stevenson Memorial Shoot this weekend in Grayling, MI to benfefit Muscular Distrophy.  We raised a quite few bucks last year and hopefully more this year.  At least 3 Handi Forum members I know will be there.  It's grinding down to the decisions.....which Handis to take.  The lineup now looks like the Maxi Shortie, the .223, the 7.62x39 and either the .45LC or the .445.  Patty's not shooting. (that's a relief, I won't be embarassed). She's taking her laptop to work on a proposal and her spinning wheel to relax.  I just thought....that's pretty nice, combining two far apart eras, isn't it?

Yes Quick,

He will be there, and now has a Handi as well. The roster is full as of now, but if all goes well, I will definitely open it up for more guests next year. I am doing this in my dad's honor for helping me learn about guns, shooting and hunting. This is not to make money or any notoriety but simply to get hunters together and see how far they really should be shooting. The Handi rifle in all trim packages is truly an effective hunting rifle and I enjoy turning people on to them, even if it does cause some bent feelings at times.

Dave

I went to a shoot a couple of years ago with my Handis.  There were guys there with 5 to 10 thousand dollar rifles.  I can't say I outshot them......but they didn't outshoot me.  The $250.00 little rifles got a lot of attention after the shoot.

Hokey Smokes....How many Handis can you get for ten thousand bucks? ??? ??? ???

For the 100 200 and  300 yard line you may want to shoot a smaller gong. If you would require guns to be shot prone with bi pod and then shoot in a sitting position for the tie breaker round you may weed out a few, or possibly standing with a mono pod. It sounds fun.

Thanks Guys,

I am glad to see some interest in such a shoot and will surely open a few places for the Graybeard Brotherhood next year. As far as shooting the truck, a point reduction would not matter nearly as much as having to pay for the replacement truck (only a few hundred bucks I think). I had considered using smaller plates, but again this is to certify hunting accuracy, and 8" is a good representation of the vitals of even a small deer. I will have a few open sight rifles, at least one thunder booming .500 S&W as well as other pistols so I want to keep the vitals size close to life size. I am thinking of a few things for next year such as a 4" plate to represent varmints and having a .22 shoot as well. I have recently been playing around with a well scoped 10/22 and it is amazing the repeatable accuracy even at longer distances. All in all, this will be a friendly and relaxed day of shooting where the simple and inexpensive Handis can shoot alongside rifles costing 10 times as much. Thanks again guys. God Bless You All.
