32-36 Caliber Flinter
« on: August 03, 2010, 04:17:24 AM »
Was originally planning on have a Jaeger built in 58 caliber for deer hunting this season but when I thought about it I have a Hawken style 54 cal and a Penn/Ky in 50 cal and have used both to take whitetails.  So what I’m thinking now is a 32-36 flinter for squirrels this would give me more field time in nicer weather.  Your options please.  Flinter must.   I prefer a shorter barrel Penn/Ky type.  I want an off the shelf and not a custom.

Thanks,

Turk

I picked up a beautiful used Pedersoli made Kentucky style .32 FL over a year ago and haven't found the time to fire it...

In factory built rifles there are not many small bore options. The one that comes to mind is Cabelas Blue Ridge, it's a very nicely made rifle with an excellent lock which takes a large 7/8" flint. All else being equal, a large lock with a big flint will be more reliable than a smaller lock with maybe a 5/8" flint. The Blue Ridge is made by Pedersoli and is available in both .32 and .36 calibers.

Along with the .32 & .36 calibres...you might also consider a .40 calibre.

The little .40 is not as finicky as I have found the .32 and .36 to be (personal experience), it is a deadly accurate calibre and in many states the .40 cal can also be used on Deer sized game to boot.

I like .40 caliber, but in a choice between .32 and .36, I would get the .36.

I have two .32 cal flinters, custom built, with Douglas barrels. One built by me and one built by  Jim Turpin. Every squirrel I ever hit with either one of them were put in the pouch. I happened up on an old groundhog once and popped him in the head with that little .310 ball...DOA...It does all I have ever asked it to...If you hit 'em in the body you are still gonna loose meat!!!....Ed
