I got the h@R 243 cal. finally to shoot
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:27:52 AM »
I seem to run into trouble with the 243 cal.
I would say after about 100 rounds down the tube the group started coming together.I tried the same loads I use in mt SPR18 243 cal. but I could never get more then 2 shots in a group or a group greater then 2"
I find the throat in the ejector barrel seem to chamber long,I tried nosler 95 gr. and found the action will close on 2.820 I also found excess brass stretch excess of .010.
I tried a different approach and it worked out I stayed with the mid-range load
and seated the bullet to 2.745 all three loads shot excellent IMR 4064 seem what the barrel likes
I also tried the hornady 100 gr.spbt with a COLA of 2.718
Sierra 85 grain HPBT seem to put 3 shots under 7/8"
brass stretch problem was solved to .003 on the shoulder compared to .010

Sounds like  you have it sorted out. Discovering what your rifle likes is sometimes a long process. Congratulations.

That darned harington was always at Richardson. They just couldn't get along ;D

I have a 243 barrel that isn't shooting like I want. Have to get back to it and try some 4064 I just got. Need to look if it goes with 75 gr bullets. Also have some of the 85gr Sierras.  Thanks

I am working on a 243 myself, I have the COAL at 2.70" with the 85 gr Sierras. Problem is, it only leaves about .18" of the bullets bearing surface in the brass.  Is that enough?  I am using the starting load with IMR4350 right now and getting about 2.5" of vertical with 0.5" of horizontal.  Any ideas?

One thing I found out with mine was heavier, longer bullets needed to be slowed down.

About 90% of the time my vertical stringing is from a just barely loose stockbolt.  I retighten and the problem usually goes away.  More of a problem with the 45 caliber guns but it did happen on my 270 and my 223 after I changed stock sets.  Probably a good idea to recheck the stock bolt torque after the first range session with a new gun or after changing stocks.  Also, helps to remember that you filled the stock bolt channel in the stock with #4 shot before you remove the buttplate. :P

I use a stud screw insert in the forearm screw hold down
I cut it to length and the hole down screw go back with the same tension all the time on the forearm stock
