Good buy on a Carcano?

I discovered a 6.5 Carcano (model 91/38?) that has been sporterized with a lamimated, shorter stock with a nice kickpad. Action appears smooth and safety operates okay. Barrel is in excellent shape. Gun metal is well-blued, and action has only small rust marks. Price tag is $65. Is this a reasonable price for a sporterized Carcano? If it works I hardly see how I could go wrong. I already have some spare Carcano ammo ready to go.

$65 is about the going price around here for butchered sporterizing attempts on a Carcano, original military pieces run about $85. I've got more than one and they're better guns than their reputation.

I'd say it's a good deal, esp. if you already have the ammo for it.  That seems to be a limiting factor in most cases.  I'd like to eventually get a Carcano(or 3  :grin: ) but I'm hesitant to add another caliber to my already extensive list of guns I have to feed.

a carcano will kill anything in northamerica,(leave the big bears alone)
up to 200yds! its a better round then a thurtythurty!mil ammo works fine!

I had a Carcano Model 38 carbine in 6.5 for 9 years and it was accurate with the right ammo.  This was the most moody rifle I have ever had concerning different ammo sources.  The Italian surplus ammo that came with the trade (Silurante 1936?) was a tack driver, the German made stuff was poor accuracy wise.  The Norma commercial brand shot well, but expensive as I did not handload.

Try some different loads if the stuff you have is not all that great, gunshows can be a source.  I found the action to be stiff, but in the hands of a good rifleman, yea, I believe it could have been the gun that was credited with shooting President Kennedy in 1963.

The Italians used this basic action in WW 1 and WW 2, so that gives it some operational history.
