O.T. Goin' ta da schute (Update)
« on: July 24, 2010, 11:26:00 AM »
I'm posting this here, cause all the rifles going are Handis.  The .45-70, .30-30, 7.62X39 and all the pistol calibers.  I loaded up 165 .38s today, and have Maxis, Supermags and .44 Mags to do yet. I posted this on the Michigan Region Hunting forum and am duplicating it here.
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Patty and I are going down to Grayling MI on Friday, the 6th to the TSMS...Tom Stevenson Memorial Shoot on the 7th and 8th to benefit Muscular Distrophy.  The shoot is hosted by Tom's Mom and Dad, the Stevensons.  It used to be just a bunch of friends getting together for a weekend shoot.  After young Tom passed from MD, it became a memorial benefit shoot.  We raised a few bucks last year and will try again in August.  Lew Crawford, (44 Man), and Patty and myself will be going.  Lloyd Smale, unfortunately can't make it this year.  I don't know if any other GBO members are going.

It's a good time with good friends and after the guns are put up, good food and libations.

An Update:  Bikerbeans sounds like he'll be there too.  I'm getting the rifles and ammo together now.  It looks like all Handis.  It's gonna be the .223, 7.62X39, .357 Maxi Shortie, .445 Supermag, and .45LC.  The .45-70 is on a bear mission and is staying home.  It will be working seriously (405s) when I get back.

It's gonna be a busy Fall around here, no doe tags in my DMU and a freezer without venison.  So, besides bear hunting, I'll be bow hunting to put a couple of butterball yearling does in the freezer.  Jeez, a guy could get mixed up.  Bow and bear season overlap.  An old guy like me could get mixed up and whack a doe or two with the .45-70 longbow. ::) ::)

Is this open to anyone?  If'n I pay the fee?

If so, what is the location?  Camp Grayling?

Might be able to make it up there Saturday.  Sounds like fun for
a good cause.

I'd like to go to Grayling to try and see if there is anything left of Bear Archery or related sites.

I'm jealous!  I lived in GR for 4 great years - back in the 80's.  Loved MI (less Mo-town).  We were big-time family campers, hunters, fishermen, cross-country skiers, etc.  Loved the UP!  Pictured Rocks was a camping favorite.  Only place I ever experienced temps in the 30's in August and fresh Venison for sale at the local market - haha  ;D.  IIRC, used to go to a gunshop called Jay's in Clare on the way north.  But, was a regular at Bob's in Hastings.

Living in MI reminded me a lot of my upbringing in upstate NY (Syracuse, Watertown, and a few lesser know spots).  Used to hunt snowshoe rabbits (wearing shoeshoes) on Tug Hill.  Still do the central Adirondacks for deer.

Airsporter, we share a lot of things.  I grew up hunting and fishing in Upstate NY.  We fished from Phonecia up the Esopus north, the feeder streams after the big browns that came up from the Ashokan to spawn.  I hunted the Adirondaks north to Canada, and worked on several dairy farms around Bainbridge.....hunting and fishing all the time.  You're welcome here any time, my friend.

Well, things worked out well this week.  I we ended up getting caught up at work and so I'm about to leave to head up to the shoot after all.  8)  Hopefully, I can find it.  lol  I've been in the grayling area many times, but that was 20+ years ago.  I'm sure I can find it, just may have to stop and ask a bunch of silly questions at gas stations!  Well, hopefully, I can catch up with some of you.  Should be there in a couple or 3 hours.  ;)

Anyone on with directions from Grayling?  I cannot seem to find any good info about the location locally.  Been hunting 3 hours.  8(  Sports shop sent me on a goose chase to an MRPA sanctioned shoot.  Please PM me if you know, so I'll get an email notification.  Posting from my phone is a little tough.

Thanks for the attempted assists, but no luck.  8(  I guess perhaps next year, I can get the info in advance even if I'm not sure I'm going to make it.  lol  I had a glimmer of hope at one point, because a lady at the farm stand with baked goods said she knew Tom growing up and gave me "directions" to his parents house as she remembered it.  Only problem was the landmarks she gave me were apparently not there now.  At least it was a beautiful day for a drive, eh?  ;)

Did you make enough on your "wagers" to pay to ream your 45/70 to 45/120 and your 30-30 to 30-30AI? ;D

Sorry couldn't make the trip, wanted to me you and the Missus. :(

Hope you had a fine weekend shootin' and a visitin'

tacklebury, I appologize for not getting you the information on the shoot.  When you said you had to work, I forgot about it.  I also never checked GBO posts here over the weekend until this morning, plus we had severe T storms till about 9 am Sunday, and I thought the morning shoot would be cancelled, but it cleared and we shot for a few hours.  Tom, It's MARK Stevenson, not Terry, but it doesn't matter, he's not in the phone book.  Patty and I just got in, and we're pooped.  In the morning, I'll post all the contact info for folks who want to attend next year.

We had a blast.....lots of them.  Good shooting and visiting with wonderful people.  Great food and a chance to shoot some very special old and new guns.

44 Man not only brought up the SB2 frame I bought from him, but he also gave me a new or like new Whitetails Unlimited stock set......just tells ya the kinda folks that visit there.

The shoot's on State land, so we can't leave gongs, canopys etc. overnight for fear of vandalism.  Next year, we're thinking of renting a Porta-Potty and having some of us camp overnight so we don't have to tear down and set up each day.  We'd set up on Friday and tear down Sunday PM.

More tomorrow.

Pete

Pete - No worries bud.  I knew there was a distinct possibility that I wouldn't be able to locate you, I just had hopes that someone locally might have known about the locations.  ;)  As I said, it was a beautiful day for a drive and was a last minute decision once I knew I wouldn't have to work.  ;)

The contact information for next year's shoot is riding around with Patty in the glove compartment of her van.  I forgot to take it out this morning, so I'll post it tonight or tomorrow..

Tim just called me, he's got two factory new .38.55 barrels, and he fit them to one of his frames.  He's cutting them to 18 inches, lengthening the extractors, and he slugged the barrels.  I'm putting a red-dot on mine....I'd prefer open sights, but I can't do that any more.  I hope mine will jump on the frame and stock set 44 Man brought up for me.

I shot about 100 rounds through the Handi Russian/American Single Shot SKS this weekend.  I had zero FTFs shooting Russian steel cased ammo.  But at the end I did have one stick from lacquer build up in the chamber, but no hard primer issues.  From here out, it's brass cases only.

I was surprised how accurate and consitant that rifle shot with the cheap ammo.  I really like it.  Accurate and mild recoil.

I called my sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Dave Sullivan of Midland Park, NJ today to discuss some matters of my mother's estate.  Anyhow, we got that over with and he inquired about where we were this weekend and I told him about the shoot.  Ya gotta understand, I've known this guy for over 50 years and always thought he was anti-gun.  It turns out that he worked at the Springfield Armory one summer as a highschool kid proof testing barrels for the M1 and light machine gun.  He's not anti at all.  Just has no interest and doesn't own any.  He was delighted with what we were able to do for Muscular Distrophy, and had a lot of questions about the firearms used and what they could do.  He was seriously interested.  If he wasn't 75, I could make him a Handiholic......I might try just the same.

"If he wasn't 75 I would make him a Handiholic"??!!?? :o   You mean I have to give up my breakopen rifles when I turn 75? :P  The father of a friend of mine gave up whiskey at 75 yrs old, but he keep shooting until he was in his mid 90s. ;D
