Ruger No. 3 in 30-40 Krag
« on: July 22, 2010, 04:46:45 PM »
One of my associates called me today and has a No. 3 in 30-40 which I am going to buy. I have other No. 3's and No. 1's, but never a 30-40. Any input is appreciated.

I am not sure how many of those were produced?  Cabelas has a special run of Number 1's in 30-40 Krag right now.  Only 100 of those being made.  They have the high gloss blue, and circausian walnut stocks.  They want $1400 for them.  There is a local dealer with a Number 3 in 30-40 that I have been tempted to buy, but I just purchased one of the recent Number 1's in 303 British.

I had one on lay-away at Dick's sporting goods in Vestal,NY back in Dec. of 77. Total cost $150.00. With a very nicely figured stock. I backed out of the deal. I have kicked myself many times over for not seeing it through.

The #3 is the only Ruger I like.  .30-40 is perhaps my favorite rifle caliber.  The #3 in .30-40 is #1 on my rifle wish list.

I have other No. 3's, but the 30-40 in very nice condition has not been in my sights until yesterday. The problem now is obtaining brass. I also have No.1's, but I prefer the simple, clean lines of the No. 3.

I've had a 30/40 in a #3 for 15 years. Its a nice cartridge for deer where I hunt. Just shooting factory ammo. However, I wanted an exposed hammer( not certain what that means) and purchased a G2 having MGM make a barrel. Nice carry gun for deer hunting.

Congrats on the No.3 .30-40. Its nice to use the older so called "obsolete" cartridges.
I've always chosen the No.1s - just never liked the barrel band around the forend.

Sweeeeet. Picked up the rifle today - 1976 vintage in like new condition. I also obtained new brass from a friend on the Smith & Wesson forum. Now to load and test fire. Life is good.

Very cool.  I shot my first deer with my Great Grandpa's WWI 30-40 Krag bolt action.  It was really accurate.  Walking to my buddy's house I saw a partridge sitting in a low hanging limb by our creek and took it's head off at 30 yards.  That was cool to see and tasty.  ;)

I saw a No.1 on 303 British at a Scheel's today. I did not have $990.00 to spend on it.

I know you can put a #1 buttstock on the #3 as I have one in 30-30. Not a cataloged item, just like the 30-30 and has a
douglas bbl. But I think the alexander henry on the #1 has the same bbl contour as the #3> Frank
