High Performance .480 Ruger
« on: July 15, 2010, 04:08:18 PM »
Friends,
I have a Rossi/Puma model 92 rifle chambered for the .480 Ruger.
I am wondering if anyone knows of a commercial manufacturer
who makes high energy or high performance premium ammo for
the .480 Ruger? Most of what has been available does not give
the round its true potential.

Kindly,
Rifle Man

I am not a .480 shooter and can't help you in terms of "heavy" commercially available rounds.  As a rule, Buffalo Bore Ammo generally manufactures heavy loads  for various cartridges so is a good source to check.

If you cannot locate manufactured ammo, you may have to handload to approach the potential of the round.

As a starting point I would recommend that you check several published reloading sources  (Hornady would be a good first step) to see if recommended handloads meet or exceed factory listed ballistics.  If so the next step would be to verify the rifle is capable of standing up to the pressures generated by the handloads.

If everything checks out then you have the option of developing handloads specific to your rifle and needs.

Not a direct answer to your question , but an option to consider as you try and locate ammo that meets your needs.

Silvertp:
Thanks for your advice. I plan to check a few websites in order
to see if "heavy" loads for the 480 Ruger are available. I am
almost certin they are, but of course, the question is where?

FWIW, the .480 Ruger IS a high-performance load - It just hasn't had the spin doctors working on it as much as the .454 Casull & the .475 Linebaugh have.
The .480 is a well-balanced cartridge, providing a lot of energy without the recoil of larger hard-kicking rounds.
In a light rifle like the Rossi - much more WILL be felt !

However, if your Model 92 will feed the somewhat longer .475 Linebaugh ammo from the magazine, the chamber could have a .475 chamber reamer run in .21" deeper, to clean it up to .475 specs, w/o any other work.

The rifle would then be able to shoot .475 magnum loads ( 50,000psi), with the option of also chambering/shooting the .480's (48,000psi) as a ".475 Special" load (like: .38 Special in a .357).
Since your Rossi is also currently chambered for the .454 Casull, which runs at a much higher operating pressure, you could be good to go.

Failing that, the .480 can be handloaded to within 150fps of the Linebaugh - the operable word being "handloaded".

What is high energy or high performance premium 480 Ruger ammo?  The 480 Ruger has a SAAMI maximum average pressure of 48,000 psi.  The 475 Linebaugh is 50000 psi and the 454 Casull is 60000 psi.  How much more do you need?

Don't understand why the hornaby 400 gr doesn't just make you happy. I shoot it in both my 92 and my raging bull for deer season. I get  a big kick when a friend wants to try one.
