Farmed Raised Catfish comeing to an end?
« on: July 15, 2010, 01:19:01 PM »
For anyone that might be interested.

Catfish farms have been in decline for many years now.

The fish farmers that don't own stock in a feed mill are about all gone. The farms that have stock in feed mills have seen the feed segment as the only profit in the pond raised fish business. When the mill owners lose the last of thier outside feed customers to create cash flow those feed plant owning farmers also will be in negative cash flow.

I herd from a reliable source that one of the larger processors is looking to get out of the business.

Feed and production costs are too high to allow profit.

I like fish and wonder what the future and price of market fish will be. eddiegjr

Yep, that would be bad.  There is no way to supply all the demand reasonably without farming.  Besides, they tell us locally to not eat too many of the fish.....we're downstream of Atlanta..... ???

We are impoting fish from Viet Nam.  I saw a videoshowing the places and water the catfish are raised in.  We could not do that here.  They are raised in water containing human waste and industrial waste.

More imports not meeting our  standards while our industries are dying.

Well, since I can't say anything about the people of Viet Nam without it being politcally incorrect in the extream, to the point it could even offend some of my friends here, I won't say anything...

When I first built my pond catfish food was $7.50 per 50 pounds with no tax. Last time I bought it I paid $17 per 50 pounds and now it's around $20 and I won't be feeding them anymore. They best find enough food in the pond like the bream and bass do as I can't afford to buy catfish food anymore.

Yep GB,

that is what happened to the farmers that didn't have stock in a feed mill, that along with fuel and electricity prices going way up and the price of fish staying basically the same as in the 80s and 90s. People in the US eat red meat and won't pay high prices for fish. eddiegjr

I'll have you know I caught over 40# of catfish from the Chattahoochee recently.  I would have eaten them, but each of them looked at me with those three sorrowful red eyes and I had to put them back...... ???

Graybeard,
I have a friend who stopped feeding his catfish for the same reason.  Now, a year later they are pretty thin.
I saw a documentary a few months back that had some reports as to where some of Obama's stimulas money was going.  Two catfish farmers in Ohio received over $62,000 to buy feed with.
Maybe you could send in your application.  There is absolutely no telling who that man will give money to. ;D

Skinny fish will regain body weight in a hurry. stick a pipe in the edge of the water and they train quick to come when the pipe is tapped. Feed a little in Sept to get some of them back in shape. Dog food that will float a couple of minutes and no more than 8 or 10% protien will work. They will gain weight to get through the winter. Don't try to fill them all up, just enough to let the aggressive ones eat. The agressive ones will eat the smaller ones through the winter.

Put brush or anyother cover in the water's edge and add to it as the water goes down. this will protect any brim and small fish to create cover to protect a food source. County extension  services often have drawings of a good structure pattern to create protection for the forage fish throughout the year. Brim and redfins in good shallow dense cover that runs down into deep sater, make it ard for the cats and other big fish to get the forage fish for a cheaper longer lasting regenerateing food source. If the brim and shiners run out just make a denser patch of brush a little larger and add more "baits" in the spring.

Artificial hollow stumps can be made from old car tires. (EPA doesn't like this.) Cut the bead out all the way around 1/2 way between the bead and tread. Clamp together with hog rings. 2 or 3 tires deep, 4 for a laying can. Cut 2 or 3 diamond shaped holes for fish to swim through, good brim stumps. They will also serve as laying stumps for cats in the spring. 2 or 3 per acre set close to the bank. A layer of concrete in the bottom helps but not necessary.
