270 range report
« on: July 11, 2010, 01:57:57 PM »
Went to the range with my 270-barrel I purchased from gomerdog. I used a Pepsi can shim and it locked up tight. I used a Hammonds Cartridge adaptor to site it in. Slicker that cat stuff on a doorknob. I had loaded about 75r with trail boss. Thanks Quick, 16g with a 130g SP bullet. I have never loaded 270's before and messed up some. Apparently there is no crimp on the bullet seater. I tried and it just ballooned the cases. I am used to pistol dies. The de-capper and sizer just puts a 1/4" on the neck to hold the bullet in. The first round I put in did not seat and I tried to force it and it stuck in the chamber. It took me an hour and a half to get it out. I pored PB Blaster down the barrel and let it soak for 30 min.  Then used a big hammer and it came out.  Cleaned everything up and went back to the range. The bullets are seated to the channeler but were touching the rifling and stiff to load. I had figured this all out ahead of time but must have missed one. But, check out the targets. Once I dialed in the scope, what a rifle. I almost think I don't need the 223 anymore. I adjusted the scope very little at 25y and never again. I have Two guns now to put thru the chronograph. The 45/70 muzzleloader and the 270. Light recoil and good accuracy.

Hey George,

Glad to see you're having fun with the 270 barrel.  ;D

Hope to read more of your experiences.

The 270 was one of my first cals that I reloaded for and still do to this day. It may not be for every one or the most versitle compared to the bullet selection of the 7mm's or the 30cal's, but there is a reason it's been so popular, at first I didn't know why but after I have had a good 270 for awhile I know now 8)
I have had several (6+) 270 barrels in a Handi and all of them were shooters.
