.17 HMR Ammo
« on: July 09, 2010, 11:16:52 AM »
What variety .17 HMR ammo shoots best in the 23 inch Contender barrel? I don't think that's a dumb question, I've had 3 different .22 Magnum guns over the years and Winchester ammo was far and away the best in all three rifles, so it's not unreasonable to expect one brand of ammo to work better in the .17 HMR...

All .17HMR ammo is made by one company. Win, CCI, remington and hornady ammo is all the same except for the color of the ballistic tip. Just try the different grain weights. 17 grain, 20 grain xtp and the FMJ.

People speak highly of the Eley brand of 17 hmr.  I don't shoot that round, but they (Eley) do make great 22 lr target ammo, so I am sure the quality is there.  Just a matter of what shoots well in your rifle.

Eley doesn't list 17hmr ammo, just 17M2, it would be nice if they did and I'd give it a shot as soon as I could get some, but it's not in their 2010 catalog.  :-\

I had one and shot CCI Hornady, and Remington without seeing any difference in point of impact.Extremely accurate head shots on squirrels no problem.

I have been very happy with Hornady vmax ammo in mine. I haven't tried any of the others myself. My buddy has a Savage 17 hmr, and he got noticeably better groups with the Hornady than with the CCI's. So when it was time to try some in my bbl, I started with the Hornady's.

Ahh, OK.  I knew it was a 17, just assumed it was the HMR

I have a 23" HMR in the Contender and I found that all of the ammo on the market shoots quite well.  However, the one that is the most accurate right now is the Hornady 20 grain.  I say right now because I have found different lot numbers often give extremely different results down range.
