You'll find there are a gazillion threads on 357max loads, there are at least a dozen in the last couple months, use the page search (ctrl f) to search the last dozen pages or the search function and you'll get a lot more info than in another thread.  ;) A1680 and Lil'gun with 180gr jacketed or 200gr cast are the most often mentioned, there are also links to 357Max loads in the FAQs.

I certainly agree with Tim, however remember the Handi comes in two twists that will determine what length bullets it will digest. I have the short twist and it loves 180-200 grain bullets & A1680

I guess I'm "Et up with the Yankee dumbass" as my old Florida Cracker friend Rocky would say.  I don't have a clue as to the rate of twist in either of my Handi .357 Maxis.  All I can tell ya is they both shoot 158s and 180s just fine.  I tried 125 gr. .38s and they wouldn't shoot worth dog doo.

I'm "thinking" the only 18¾" twist barrels may have been pre-87 H&R Inc 357mags/maxs, I have an older barrel that I bought in 2004 that was used and rechambered to 357Max before I got it, it's 1:15½", and a 2007 accessory barrel that is also 1:15½", I don't recollect anyone stating they actually have an 18¾" twist barrel, but my recollector isn't always spot on either!! ::) But I think everyone that replied in the discovery thread on 1:15½" 357mag twist rate reported the faster twist rate.

I just had some fun this weekend with my new Max. 180 grain Hornady pistol bullets and A1680,
just like many recommend, show great promise.

I also loaded 20, 38 special cases with cheap 125 grain cast bullets and my Granddad's Dupont
Pistol Powder #6 @ 4.2 grains. At fifty yards I had 5 flyers at 4"  but the remaining 15 all went into
a 1" hole. Next time I will weigh all the charges, bullets and brass and see if I can get rid of the
flyers.

In my old orig 357MAXI barrel, a near max load of AA1680 powder in a maxi case with  either a 180 SP, XTP or 170GR GD bullet and a SR primer shoots where ever I aim them.

Mine shoots 38/357 almost as well too. In 38's I shoot 158 LWS or 148 DEWC bullets with light loads of Bullseye, 231 or #2. Same loads I use for bullseye pistol competitions.

Good luck and welcome to the club!!  ;D

Thanks for the current respones and keep em coming. My barrel is a 1:15 1/2 I checked it to see ;). Currently as a 357 mag. it shoots 145wstp 1 1/2@100yd. 158xtp fp 1 3/4 @ 100yd :). 180 Cp wfn its not to fond of w/ h110 or lil gun. I haven't been able to locate any AA 1680 locally, may have to order.
Thanks again to all for taking the time respond and HAVE A FINE DAY!!! ;D ;D ;D
