Someone will probably be along shortly to berate you for doing a 'bubba' sporterizing job on a fine, historical military rifle.

I say, if it works for you, that's great!  You've got a rifle that you like for not a lot of coin.  The only suggestions I would make are 1)  a recoil pad, and 2) a 'sniper' bolt handle - it makes it significantly easier to manipulate the bolt.

I like your camo job!

There are soooooooo many of these rifles that I doubt they will ever be valuable collectors pieces.. Reid Coffield did a piece..don't recollect where it was but he sporterized a Nagant and it rally looked good.. Welded a new bolt handle on the bolt body behind the rear receiver ring..and did some reshaping?? or the action. He used a side mounted scope that positioned the scope over the center of the action..I think.. The memory is not so hot any more.. Maybe someone else saw the same articles/story..? These are tough and fairly powerful rifles, easily all thats needed for most North american game..

Well it was only like $79 for the Rifle. But it might be something Bubba would be proud of. Bent bolt might be $25 more plus a another $20 for the over the action scope mount, not to mention 9-10 bucks for a butt pad. It works,so what the heck.. :)

Nice work. ;D I've got a sportered Mosin like that too... I cut the barrel on mine to 20". They make great hunting rifles.

The "drop in" stocks make change-outs pretty easy.  I think the Mosin looks cool as a hunting rifle, and they're pretty simple to work on.  When it starts jamming on you, it's probably primer parts stuck in the bolt, so just disassemble the bolt and reassemble it after shaking out the little "rocks" from the bolt head.  Reassemble everything and it's good to go again.

My favorite Mosin build is a bench gun... yes, a "bench" Mosin.

Teludyne Tech Industries manufactures a bench gun using a Mosin that's really cool.  They add their straitjacket technology to the barrel, cut a custom stock, and drop the group sizes remarkably.  Since it's a "custom gun", it's designed to fit you, but it's pricey for a Mosin... about $800.

If it seems crazy to spend that kind of money for a Mosin, think about what they do to manufacture this gun... it's barrel is cut down and recrowned, the bolt is rebuilt to add a standard scope mount function, the action is reinforced, and for a few more bucks, they can add a Timney trigger and cut down the "bolt movement" from releasing the firing pin.  They take a solid cherry blank and custom cut the stock to fit both you and the gun.
It's excellent workmanship and the guns shoot under an inch with handloads.

That was a series of articles in Shotgun News, and you can order a CD/DVD from them with the compiled series.  The rifle that Reid Coffield did looked really sweet - kinda hard to tell it was a Mosin when he finished with it.

And FWIW, I kind of agree that sporterizing a Mosin is hardly a sin, providing it's not a rare, collectible variant.

kydia,

Those are some sweet looking Mosins.  What kind of scope mounts did you use?  and where did you get the bolt handles done at?

Mosins are a lot of fun to work with.  Get some 203 grain Wolf Ammo and you'll find it shoots groups like they were handloaded.  Mine shoots about 1.25 groups with the 203 grain bullets @ 100 yards.  They're soft points (if you buy them), so they translate into instant "hunting ammo" groups.

I asked a buddy of mine once "what kind of groups do you get"... he said "last year, about 4 six pointers"...
it's all in how you measure things...

Matt

The 91/30 has the ATI mount, the M44 has a hybrid made from a Tasco shotgun side mount. I did the bolts myself.

I have been messing with 91/30, M44, M39 etc  type rifles for 10 years.
I weld on them, drilling and tapping them, re barrel them, re stock them, glass and pillar bed them, make scope mounts, etc.

Most people ask me, "How did you get the 45/70 to feed?"
I did not. I shoot it single shot.

Before I mess them up, I check with this guy:

He, so far, has always reassured me that my rifles are common as dirt and don't worry about it.

Nothing could hurt the value of a Mosin Nagant.  You did a good job.

Very nice.  I am working on a mosin project of my own.  Cut the barrel to 16 1/2 in. still need to finish the recrown and refinish the stock after reshaping it.  But it is a shooter.  Cant wait to take it hunting this fall.

Ventorino recently wrote a test rport of the major sniper rifles from WWII, the Springfield 03A4, No.4 T, M98 sniper variant (2 versions??) and the Moisan. The Moisan turn in the best performance.. Of course a single specimen doesn't a valid test make but still it shows what these rifles can do.. The Russians used snipers or designated marksmen much more than the other combatants..
