41 Mag Range Report
« on: July 04, 2010, 06:57:29 PM »
Well I finally got out to the range this weekend with my 41 magnum Ruger BH 4 5/8" and some 240 grain bullets cast with my Lee 90332 mold and loaded over a mid-range load of Unique (should be just about 1,000 fps) they shot a 6 shot group at 2" at 25 yards. Not a tack driver but as I shoot it more I'm sure the group will shrink a little. Should be "minute of deer" out to 50 yards or so. I cast the bullets using WW and 2% tin. Charlie

Thanks for the report. I have a Ruger Blackhawk 41 Mag with the 6.5" barrel. I prefer the 4 5/8"
like you have. I need to get some cast bullets and some Unique and get busy shooting it. I have
only shot some full house H110 210gr jacketed loads that I worked up for my 1894S Marlin.
They were real uncomfortable to shoot through a handgun and not accurate at all. I don't
cast my own bullets. I going to go with some Lasercast 215gr SWC. The 41 Mag is a great
caliber. Any deer that gets unlucky enough to catch a round from a 41 mag is going down!

Thanks Bob, I think I am really going to like the 4 5/8 barrel well too. The sight radius works well for me and at the ranges I plan to hunt with it it will be fine. I thought about buying some 215 grain cast but I really like to make my own. Hopefully a deer will go down this fall. That is my goal. Charlie

I also have the .41 mag in 4 5/8. Had it almost 20 years and it's still my favorite shooter! ENJOY!

I have a stainless 357 Mag Blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel that is a real pleasure to shoot once I got
the right load dialed in. I am looking at getting a 45 LC Blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel in the not too
distant future, but I might just get a 41 Mag 4 5/8" barrel Blackhawk instead. I don't think I would
be giving up too much by going with the 41 Mag. It is a pretty darn good caliber. Pleanty of
knockdown power and I already have the dies and brass for it. I just like the shorter barrel a lot
more. Your 41 Mag will definately get the job done if you hit that deer in the right spot. Good
luck and good hunting!

save some money and buy yourself an lbt 250lfngc mold. Its hands down the best overall shooting 41 bullet ive ever tried. Im not a big fan of his aluminum molds but that design is worth having

Thanks Lloyd but I question wheter that bullet would chamber in my pistol. I have to seat the 240 gr semi wadcutter to crimp at the end of the last lube groove for it to chamber in my gun. What is the length of the bullet that drops from that mold? I may consider it if it would chamber in my gun. Charlie

It may well be worth giving the bore a very complete cleaning with a good copper cleaner to be sure all traces of copper jacket are gone. Some guns are very picky & will not shoot their best until all copper is gone.

Years ago my shooting buddy had a BH in 41 Mag & had this problem, until it was completely free of copper fouling.

He got a Lee 240 gr mould, and I presume it is the same as yours. At any rate he worked up several good loads between 8.0 ~ 10.0 gr of Unique. I would also consider using a harder alloy, if you see any leading. Another thing to try is sizing to a different diameter. Tradition has it that .001 over bore size is the best place to start, but it is not always the final word.

I expect you will be well pleased, once you find the magic load.

I just ordered some 215gr Keith style cast bullets from Missouri Bullets and some Unique for my New Model 6.5" 41Mag. I'll let you know how it turns out with a range report. 41 Mags rock! ;D

Now that's what I'm talking about! I once had a Model 27 Smith&Wesson 357Mag that I could have done that with.
I'm hoping I can get my New Model 41Mag Blackhawk to shoot like that someday. Nice shooting! ;D
