Finished off the accents of my Selfbow
« on: July 04, 2010, 06:23:51 AM »
Well I wanted to add some accents to my Selfbow, and used wax linen and changed the grip wrap as well.  I thought about using a red instead of the green but, I figured a bit of green looks better with the black.

Spose something like that would work, iffin I wanted a bow sight  :D  BUT, I shoot instinctive, and would never use a bow sight.

Yep, I knew you were  ;D but I am thinking about changing the green to a dark red to match my new self nock arrows though.

The arrows are made of laminated birch I stand corrected these are cedar, and are they ever sweet looking, and with the Zwickey Eskimo 125 gr glue on broadhead they weigh in right at 495 gr total.  We thought with the 45# Selfbow, that I might use a 145 gr or 150 gr but I will see how these fly with the 125 gr BH's on them.

Thought I would post some pics of these, as these tested so nicely, and flew like a bee straight to honey.

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words and those tell me what Traditional Archery is all about!!!!  You did a really awesome job on the bow.  It is one of the cleanest self bows I've seen in a long time and something you should really be proud of making.

I love 4 feather fletched arrows, they make it simple to nock an arrow (there isn't a wrong way) and they really do a great job at stablizing broadheads.

Now the next pictures we want to see is with the first kill from this setup.... ;)

I have to give all the credit to All Hawks Kill, his creation and master work and I must say he is an awesome arrowsmith.

Thanks for the compliment, now if I could make bows like the one you made I'd be really happy.  I've thought about it a few times over the years, but never tried.  I'm really glad the arrows worked out so well for you.  The four feather design is something new I've been playing with, and really falling in love with.  You wouldn't think that one extra feather would have that much difference but it really does.

By the way, how did the nocks fit your string?

Happy shooting and truely do hope you have luck bringing down a fine trophy with that setup.

Derek

Nocking above the nock ring or knot, the arrows want to slide up the string, no problems nocking below the knot.  I can hear the snap fit as I slide the selfnock thru, and that is what I want to hear when I nock my arrows.

I am getting so many compliments on these arrows that you made, and how they themselves should get back to a real arrow nock.  Others have told me, "Those are to pretty to shoot"  ::) I just tell them that these arrows were made to be shot.  Heck, these arrows are going on some hunts even.

I get the "Those are too pretty to shoot" when ever I go to a public shoot.  At last years TTHA Show in Houston, I took a set and my longbow along basically for show, but was talked into shooting in the 3D popup contest.   Long story short, I broke one of my arrows when I shot low on a 40 yard shot.  I thought about 10 people were going to cry, especially the guy that talked me into shooting. :'(  I basically tell them the same thing you are telling folks.  I made them to shoot not to look at, if I'd had made them to look at they would be hangin on the wall and not in my quiver... ;)

I generally nock under the knot, so I've never noticed that.  I'll keep that in mind when I make the round opening for the string from now on.   THANKS!!!!!

So now, what do you think?

Change the green accent to a RED

Or leave it LIME GREEN

I like the contrast.  All are nature colors and go well together.  If it were me I wouldn't change a thing, but you can do what makes you happy, that's what is important.

Wow love the quiver!!!!!  And yes they do look really good in it also.

I went with a more Medieval style quiver.  A friend of mine in the LSBA made it for me in exchange for a dozen arrows.  Not sure who got the better deal... ;)

I like your quiver, looks awesome.  The white feathered arrows are the ones I painted white top with brown shaft and fletched myself, they are Easton game getter 2117's and fly like darts as well.  But that quiver is gonna have more of your arrows soon, I hope.  I got to see what my budget will go for.  Will come into pocket, after my rifle is sold, hopefully soon as a guy has interest in it, and has said by the end of the month  ::)

But I also have my eye on another Selfbow that is bamboo backed hickory that is 60" long and 52lbs @ 28"...

I'll work with you on the arrows, we can do them 3 at a time if need be, until you have a quiver full.  There really never was anything wrong with those ole Easton arrows.  When they are setup right they always worked great for me when I've used them.  You did a really good job painting those, they look really good in the quiver also.

That is a pretty good looking bow as well.  Sounds like you are going down the same path I went, more bows and arrows than you will ever be able to use..... ;)  My wife just  ::) when ever I get something new.... :D

Derek

It is an addiction that has set in, and I don't see it stopping.  My wife and daughter are actually going to be looking when going to yard sales.  I told her, Traditional Bows Only as most people don't know what they've got and let them go cheap.

Did you see what arrows came with the donated Bear Kodiak Hunter and Super Kodiak bows?

Original Bear Archery Fabinglass arrows with 6 Bear broadheads (never used) but the 6 with points have been used.  The Bear Achery box is in great condition after all these years as well.
