I went with the .223

After thinking it over and reading the pros and cons for each caliber for my purpose, I settled on the .223 Ultra Varmint over the .308. Having handled the .308 Ultra Hunter (which is what Dick's had labeled an Ultra Varmint) I can say it's on my list for the near future. The .223 was what I was originally interested in because it will be economical to shoot, whether I load my own or shoot off the shelf. For those who ex[ressed an interest in trading for the stock, Tim will be getting this one just as soon as I put a box through it to be sure it is mechaniclly sound (they'd probably look at me funny if I returned it with a different stock). This is a heavy 22" barrel, I'd say anybody looking for something for a rebore could do anything they wanted from this short of a .58. No help here on identifying the extremely generic 4-12x40 scope, the box that came with it just says "Riflescope" (not even a country of manufacture). My one issue is that this display model (last one they had) didn't come with the tools for the hammer extension and it is mounted for a leftie (I'm not). Anyone know what size allen wrench it takes? 

I'm hoping to radically reduce the fox and coyote population around my brother's free range chicken and turkey ranch in the near future.....

Congrats Kevin, nice looking sto...er... rifle!!!  ;D  The hammer extension takes a 5/64" or 1/16" allen wrench, they've used both sizes.

Good choice...I would try it with the scope and see how it does before I would toss the scope. I have been looking at the same rifles at Dick's for a while. Wish I had the cash to make a decision.

I was expecting it to be $289.99 plus tax today (supposed to be $10 off the sale price on $299.99 or less rifles) but they rang it up as $279.99. Even with our state's 7.75% sales tax it was only $301.23.  I'll keep you posted on how it shoots. Was it the .223 specificlly you were after?

Interesting that you like it Tim, my wife (who still can't tell my BC from my 12 gauge Pardner) took one look at it and said "that is sooo not you". I expect some time down the road I'll be getting a thumbhole laminate for it.....but I am on a teacher's salary, so not soon.

I like the gun and the stock set.  I was looking very closely at a NIB 20 ga heavy barrel slug gun that had the same stock set.  Wife put an end to rifle purchase for a while (long while in her mind) so it isn't coming home.  Was at Gander Mtn, Taylor Michigan if anybody wants it.  Was marked down but I don't remember the exact price.

I've got the same gun, only all the metal on mine is white.  Shoots real good, Clover leafs at 100 yards.  I have a Cabela's Centerfire Tactical Scope on mine.  The 3X12X40 and I have the turrent for 55gr bullets.  I have to shoot bullets that meet a specified velocity (Can't remember the velocity off the top of my head), but I just range the varmit, dial the scope and aim.  It takes a little work to get it set up, but gosh it's good out at longer ranges. 

As for having the hammer spur on the left side.  I have mine all on the left side, that way it is close to my right thumb, and easy to pull back.  Works faster than when it is on the right.  But I have long thumbs and reaching it is not a problem.  Sky can not reach the ones on my guns like I can and all of his is on the right.  Sky is 5'6", I'm 6'2".  Quite often his guns end up in my vault.  That's the way we tell them apart, his hammer spurs are all on the right, mine are on the left.

The hammer extension on my 308 Win BLR has been on the left side for 27yrs, love it, but I tried it on my Handis and didn't like it, just doesn't feel right, I think Rog is right, big hands would make a difference on the Handi, the wrist is a lot bigger than on the BLR.

My local Dick's has 223, 22-250 and 308 all in the same style - camo, heavy barrel. The prices seem always to be around $249.95, give or take +$20. Geez, I even have a box of 100 Federal 223 55g FMJ I got at Wally World for $39.95 a while back, but that is when I had some extra cash...now I have to wait for a job...but I bet I buy the reloading dies for a 223 before the rifle...now if they would only sell the Savage Edge in left-hand.

Always ask for a discount for the display models. Dick's usually gives 10% off for display models if you ask.

Boresighted it last night, I'm sure you'll all be shocked to here that if it had been done before they were plannng on it being fired at 700 yards in a 50 mile an hour wind that was crossing from the right. Took it out today and put ten rounds through it at 75 yards. Last three could be covered with a dime. Stock goes out to Tim as zoom as I can box it and mail it (hopefully before PO closes at noon).

I got a Nikon Pro Staff from Dick's just before Chrismass(it was my wifes present to me), With the coupons I had and the fact that it was the display model and I asked for a discount I got the scope for $104. It was $159.

kevin, you ain't done no wrong wif tha .223.
i got a few different kinds and 3 handi's. all are great shooters when ya find what they like.
got a pencil barrel handi the other day, and it wud'nt lock up to none of my spares. so i kept play'n wif my dedicated ones until it did lock up perfect. and it performs better than my 2 heavies @100yrds.
the receiver it finally locked up on was of course my bc-max !!!!  thats gonna be a timely/costly replacement
receiver and stockset. its for the wife, and she ain't get'n my bc-max stuff !!! :o  she can take the house but not my max........ ;) and she says...."oooooh, i like that stock and forend thats what i want"  ::) and she gets what she wants, one way or the other..... BUT NOT MINE !!! :D

10-4 on the curved steel buttplate and 45-120, I gave up on that curved buttplate on my 22" 45/70 and I was shooting bottom end trapdoor loads.

I just took my 223 HB out last night and shot a 5 shot 1 3/4" group at 300 yrds  ;D . I had to play with my loads a bunch to get it that way so if you do not get the results you want keep trying different bullets and powders. I ended up with H4198 and a 50gr Hornady SPSX to achieve the results I now get.

Do not know what the MV is, do not have a chrony but they are deadly on groundhogs Bang flop ;)

1:9 H&R 223 Rem 22" Ultra  Hunter, standard contour.

60 grn. Sierra Varmiter, 24.4 grains Ramshot TAC. 2.37" OAL, lee factory crimp, 3/4" @ 100 yards.  Check to make sure the OAL is okay in your gun.  Group size is limited by my ability to shoot, gun is better than the shooter. :(

I have the same rifle with a wood stock, I like yours better. Mine is very accurate. I did my own trigger job on it a couple of years ago, following the advice on the forum (nice and light). A couple months ago I saw a brand new handi in a .204 for the old price of $209.00. I didnt have the money so I couldnt buy it.

I'd try some varget and heavier bullets, should be able to get respectable velocity.  I'd say next thing on your agenda is a scope that is nice and repeatable, if you want to be consistent from a long ways!
