30-06 all the way...if you reload or if you think you might get another one later.

If not...270.

Would you consider a 308Win, ...    :-\
or ...
is that heresy for a 30-06 shooter ?             :o               ???

Consider the 30-06,  110 gr tsx at 3400 to 220 gr varimits to moose!

What kind of accuracy can you get out of the 110 gr bullet?                  :-\
What kind of ballistic co-efficient does it have?                     ::)

Will it really work as a varmint / coyote rifle?                ???

Would it work as well in a 308Win?                :o

Thanks,
            Chuck

Nothing wrong with a 308. Seems like you said you already have one. I read that it was invented after the 30-06 so soldiers could carry more pieces of ammo than they could with the '06. Maybe some other reasons too, but hopefully you are not going into battle with a #1, much too elegant for that.

Pick a long action '06 family cartridge (and softload it instead of getting a short action and that being it.

Sierra makes a 90gr HP for the .270 and a 110 gr HP for the 30 cal; both have given my nickel size 3-shot groups with H-380 powder.
If I recall correctly, both can offer a +/-2" PBR out to maybe 250 yards.

I got a #1-V in 22-250 for paper, crows and yotes and then a #1-RSI in 30-06 (which replaced a 30-30 NEF and a 270 bolt for deer).
But if I were to only have one #1 to cover varmints and larger game, I would go with the 270.

  Yes, as good as the 308.  Yes, will work well as a 'yote rifle with light projos.  30-06 can be loaded with anywhere from 100 grain up to 240 grain and probably more.  It's reall a go-anywhere, shoot-anything cartridge.  Nothing wrong with 308 either, I'm just saying there is no reason to pass on an '06.  Great round in every respect.

  A quick note after re-reading my post.  The 30-06 can be loaded up more ways than most any other 30 cal cartridge, but that doesn't mean any one particular rifle will like all those loads.  Like any other rifle/ammo combo, a rifle will tend to like one load better than any other.  For what it's worth.

Thanks.

Hadn't thought about that part - the individual rifle;

You really have to work with a particular rifle to see what it likes / will do.

The 30-06 must be the most versatile cartridge ever;
... still torn between 30-06 and 270Win.

Any thoughts on 25-06?

Thanks,

I'm getting 1.0-1.5" 3 shot groups out of my K1-B 30-06 using the 110gr Barnes. Three shots thru the chrono avg 3412. I would shoot varmints to caribou with this load. link will let ya take a look at load.  ;)

Doesn't the 30-06 shoulder and neck support bullets better than the 308Win?

Perfect? Close. Beautiful? To me YES! A lot of tinkering? I have two #1B's, one I had rechambered to 30/06 A.I., just because I wanted to, and had a trigger job done on it. The other is a 7mm Rem Mag that I had a Moyers trigger installed, and I put a limbsaver on both. They are both very accurate with the proper handloads. I never shot factory loads from either one... I'd love to have another in .22-250 just because I have a set of dies and all of the components sitting in my cabinet.

Sell that .308 and get a #1....

Are you guys varmint hunting?

All of my No.1's are in varming calibers (including PPC) except one. I have 3 with set triggers, one Kepplinger and 2 Canjar..... I would not want a set trigger on a big game rifle.
So yes.... I am varmint (woodchuck) hunting

The Ruger No.1 is NOT perfect...but if you own one, you ARE pretty close to Paradise!!

Actually, the No.1 IS a great rifle... beautiful, well made, versatile, very good handling, available in many calibers (some are old/obselete), different barrel lengths,etc. However - it is not a target gun to shoot 1/4moa groups. It is capable (sometimes with a little help/tuning) MOA grouping - and it does it in Style!!

Now if they would bring back the No.1S model with the 26" barrel, iron sights, and more choices in  calibers ....THEN it would be Perfect !
