New Handi Rifle Quality Report - UPDATE
« on: June 28, 2010, 10:14:37 AM »
I was a little concerned seeing what Gendoc and couple others when through with new (Illion, NY) handis, but I still ordered a new handi.  Today I picked up my NIB "CACxxxXXX" serial number 18.75" 357 Mag.  Gun was not in plastic in the box, but I bought it off the internet, could have been removed by the vendor.  The front 2" of the muzzle was in cardboard, but the finish is fine.  Gun lock was loose in the box, still possible issue from the seller, don't know.

Popped the forearm off and the barrel is tight, no movement.  Held up to the light barrel/receiver fit looks good.  The forearms is tight, but not as tight as other new handis I have bought.  Extractor works, did not check the trigger pull.  The Williams open sights appear to be installed properly.  There is some residue in the bore, just like every NIB handi I have looked at.  Overall the gun looks as good or better than other NIB pallet wood handis I have bought.

Going to clean the barrel & chamber tonight and shoot at the range tomorrow and see how it goes.  Not going to make any mods until I put 50 rounds down the tube and then I will see how it groups with 357 Mag, Jacket Handloads.

BB

PS: I know, I know, I have already put my name on the 357 Max Reamer list. ;)

UPDATE

Back form the range.  got a little over 1" group with iron sights @ 62 yards.  Gun probably a lot better than that, but the operator isn't better.  :P :P  Going to try an post target.  Using 158 grn HP/XTPs on 15 grain IMR 4227.  I dry patched the barrel before shooting but did no other cleaning or mods. before shooting. One note on the frame, it is kinda of blackish/dark gray color in the sunlight and has a little bit of glitter to it.  Also, they stamped the serial numbers fairly evenly on this one, my other CAC looks like a drunk monkey stamped the 6 digits.  I am going to put peep/fire sights on this one, I think it is going to be a shooter.  If all goes well this gun will accompany Bandit & I on opening day of squirrel season. ;D

Left out a couple of range details on the new 357.

No FTFs or FTEs.  Primer strike are very heavy, but didn't see any issues with primer rupture.

Also, just for grins I shot a Speer training bullet (plastic bullet in a plastic case, LP primer, no Powder) and it makes a dandy airsoft rifle ;D

Also, the finish on the receiver has a slight texture to go along with sparkling affect (micro metal flake i guess).

Really happy with it.

Now I am going to listen to Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reamer" ::)
