Take a look at the FAQs.  Smoke the latch shelf on the barrel.  You probably need only a little more engagement and a light touch with a stone will give you that.  It's not a big problem.  Be sure to follow up with lock-up and head space checking with a feeler guage.  You should be fine without a big hassle.  I just did one last week.

Read the pop open medicine in the FAQs, even if latch engagement is sufficient, oil/solvent on the latch/shelf may cause pop opens, it's a ridiculously easy fix to solve the problem, just make sure they're clean and dry. It's been the number one cause for problems reported by H&R gunsmiths for years and the simplest to fix. ;)

i have seen a lot of pop open's in the last several months.
all from new guns... mostly .308's .224 guns and an occasional .243 and 06
just a lil luv in the right places will solve that problem.
all are do'n 100% now.  the owners did not want to send them back.
so i doc'd on a couple a lil.... and all is well ;D even put some max recipes thru them
with no further prollems  ;)  all latches and shelves were dry.
i talked with remington about this, and they said they will gladly continue to respect the warranty
after the fix, as long as TOO MUCH was not removed.
and the owners and i,  understand that throughly.....

but sometimes you need to send it back, if its a combination of problems like i had on the ultra varmint .223
which remington replaced the entire gun... no questions asked !!!  very quickly  ;D

sea-ya.....
in tha meen time, i'm wait'n for tha  7th trumpet ta sound !!!

Ron1,

You didn't say if you are shooting handloads or factory.  I tried to reload once fired nickel plated 22-250 winchester and couldn't get the shoulder pushed back.  The nickel plated stuff was a couple of thousands too long, after full length sizing, and interfered with proper lockup of the gun.  I pulled the bullets and gave away the nickel brass.  Never had a problem with sizing on the "brass" brass for this gun.

Good luck.

ok this is or was a .204 h&r  from the start  it had problems and was sent in to be fixed.they swapped  the .204 barrel for a 22-250  barrel and adjusted the trigger. tested and returned it to me, i have only shot 1&1/2 boxes thru it just trying to get a factory load the gun likes. i think it is something with the nickel cases. all of the brass cased  bullets i tryed 45 gr/55 gr hollow points shot good. but then the nickel cases were 50 gr. ballistic tip so that could be why they  hit 3 1/2 in. higher than the other two witch were brass cased hollow points
