I asked myself this same question earlier this year..If I could have just 1 center fire Handi rifle..no extra rifle barrels for it which am I going to have built..well..my desicion was my new 30-06 Handi.Stocks are simple to switch out..and plentiful..and it can be loaded down to below lever gun levels..it can be loaded up to nip at the heels of a 300 win mag..I have my choice of very light bullets to use..and can switch to the extra heavy bullets with high BC and SD..Cast bullets can be loaded for it as well..In reality...just about any kind of load available for it if needing to purchase factory ammo..and many of them at very modest prices..and can be found just about everywhere for it...even outside the US of A

 What will a new century bring..

Second caliber choice for me is a toss up between the 7mm's and the 338's..One would be a factory 280 Remington..the other a 338-06 A-Square built by Wayne..Neither would be as versitle,but both would offer the range I prefer.If I really needed a big bore..for what ever reason..I would be hard pressed to find any rifle cartridge as a suitable all or none aspect..even though the 45-70 is certainly one of my most favorite calibers..I just would not want to be limited to that caliber for everthing and so would opt out for my 870 pump with hasting rifled slug barrel to fill that need or restriction... ;)

My county in N.Y. is shotgun only for deer so I would have to say My all purpose 20ga 22" modified choke drilled & tapped with a Tru Glo 2x red dot. Drive 5 miles south to the next county it would be my 45-70.

CF: 30-30, you can load it from 32-20 equiv. to hotter than factory, lead or jacketed bullets.
But truth be told, last one to go will most likely be be a .22RF.

Amen, eddie, I already did that......about 20 years ago ;D  We bought our home, 120 acres, barn and outbuildings for 70,000 in 1990.  Michigan, including the Free and Independent Republic of Da U.P., has a lot of political and economic problems.  But, a person can still buy good land for farming or hunting or both here on Da U.P for 2,000 or less an acre.  Ya can't find a job though, and if ya want a loaf of bread, you're gonna burn some gas. :'( :'(

I just heard that you are having the worst drought in some 50yrs. too? Maybe that will translate into less snow this winter (less is better for me, maybe not for you).
Ive done the 'Porkies' off & on for some 20yrs. and do like the frontier aspect of the U.P.

It's only that west end that's still dry.  We're swimming here on the central and eastern end.  We didn't have snow worth a squat last winter.  We only blew out the drive 3 or 4 times.  200 inches is considered normal here, and we may have had 50 total.  Snow is a big ecconomic thing here.  No snow, no winter sports, no winter tourists.  Our cash has to come from outside, cause there's none here.

Pete, their is no cash down here either.  Even if their would have been more snow I doubt I would have taken my sled out because I simply don't have the time or money now days, have to work twice is much to make half the money.  Half the people I know here are in the same boat.  I'm actually surprised its still at 2000 per acer up there, the south east part of the state should be even cheaper then that soon....LOL
