45/70 without question.  So much versatility.  You can go from a 250gr @ 2800fps to a 400 grainer pushing 2200.  Second is tough call.  .25-06 maybe.

Oldsoldja you are fairly new here this is something that has been discussed before and the conclusion has been that it is a astronomical impossibility... for to be forced to choose the earth would spin off it's axis and into oblivian. But for today mine is the New 32 cal Huntsman ;D Kurt

If you could only have one,

This from a guy that has spent the last month buying every other gun listed in the classifieds?? ;D

For just plain fun shooting and accuracy, plus the low cost of powder and bullets, and the capability of taking game from red squirrel to white tail,,the 223
found elsewhere

Kurt is right on, this has been the topic of many, many discussions, my best answer right now is the 260 Remington or 30-30 Superlight, next year it will likely be something else, depends on what I acquire in the mean time!!  ;D

Kurt's right on in another aspect......Hoakiegeewilikers....I didn't even know we had a .32 Huntsman option.....I don't have one yet ??? ??? ???

If I could only have one, common sence would dictate the .30-06.  My heart would choose the .357 Max shortie......but then there's the .45-70....and then the 7mm-08.......oh yeah, the .445....gosh...I donno.  So many Handies, so little time :'(

.44 Magnum, It can be shot from a revolver and a rifle.  A rifle can push a 300gr to 1800fps with around 22gr-23gr of powder and can take any game within 150 yards on this continent if needed to.  Same can be said for the 454 Casull just up the numbers a little.

It would be nice to have the ability to take small game but I would have to forgo the smaller cartridges because I would like to have confidence that I wont become the one being hunted.

Pete you should know by now that the possibilties are there for just about anything you want with these H&R's as long as you stay within it's physical limits and can find someone willing to get a little off kilter!!  Larry has stepped to the plate more than once... check the pics in the H&R ML forum. Jeff, My two .357s are Maximum, and they are among of my favorites.....but...if ya could only have one, it wouldn't be adequate.  I wouldn't take on a griz or a big elk, moose, etc. at a distance.  I'd use it here in Michigan on black bear perhaps, but I think my .45-70, .30-06 or .445 would be better suited for the job.  It is a superb caliber, and I love it....but again, If I could only have one, it wouldn't be the Max.

Although I have yet to fire it (I hate moving!) I would tend toward the .44 mag also.  Mates up nicely with my Smith pistol.

Then again, the .45-70 I have fired and I love it.  Talk about versitle, oh my.

Actually, the H&R rifle is my 'last rifle to go'.  Of course it chambers more than one caliber.  :)

Although I love shooting the 45 calibers, I live and hunt whitetail in a shotgun only state, so it would have to be a rifled barrel 12 ga.  If I lived in a centerfire deer area,  the 30-06 would be my first choice as the factory ammo available covers just about anything walking around the US of A.  If I didn't hunt, a 45/70 through 120 would be my first choice.

If I could only have one??? It'd be a .223 for use as a Jeep varmint gun, the pallet stock you know!
If I could have two??? .30-06 or .270, flip a coin!

I only own 1 centerfire rifle at the moment - 45 Colt. Perfect for my hunting needs. If I could only keep 1 gun it would be my 16 gauge Topper since I can hunt everything in my state with it.

A 12 ga. shotgun would be #1 as long as it would shoot Brenneke slugs right on top of the bead at 75 yards. Slugs, buckshot and birdshot cover a lot of bases. The number 2 choice is much more difficult, I guess I would go with a .35 Whelen, plenty of horsepower at longer range.

I'm pretty sure no one here will be surprised my first choice is my 45-70 BC. I've loaded it from 550 gr T. Rex killers (still looking for a T. Rex....) to 150 gr subsonic rabbit/coon/coyote/fox killers (have found quite a few rabbits).

Second choice.....probably my 30-30, it's pretty versatile in a single shot.

Course give me a few weeks with my 22" 45-70 barrel and it may put me in a spot on that second choice....
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
