New .357 barrel today
« on: June 24, 2010, 06:46:29 PM »
Well I got my new .357 barrel today.Took exactly 14 days from ship out to ship in. The first thing I did was remove the scope rail screws then reinstall with loctite. Then took it to my local gun shop & had a 3x9 scope I already had mounted & bore sited. Got home & shot 32 130gr. 38 specials through it before it got to dark. Shot good at about 35 yards.Last 6 shots little bigger than a golf ball ,little smaller than a base ball. Not bad off the hood of my truck.  :)

You're gonna love that .357.  Take a tip from a lot of the guys here and get on the reamer list and ream it to Maximum.  It gives you a heck of a lot more options, especially if you reload.  It costs only pennies more a round to load a Max instead of a .38, assuming you've got some brass.  The .38s and mags will shoot fine after reaming.  I haven't heard of anyone saying they had trouble with them.  I'm tinkering around now making a .357 max shot round for my 16.5 inch Max to nail small pests around the barn, we're only talking 25 feet or so.  I've got to get some smaller shot.  All I've got now is 4, 5 and 6.

I saw plastic shot cups for sale to use when handloading birdshot for a 38/357.  I will try and find them again and send you the link.

Be prepared to scrub plastic out of your rifling before shooting bullets again, though.
Now if you had one of those barrels that just wont group bullets..........
I just use 444 cases with 1/2oz of 7 1/2s in Grampa's Iver Johnson 410.

I was finally testing my 158 Topper .357 on rocks in the driveway. Like those .38 rounds. Sounds and feels about like a .22Mag. Had some weird blackening of the cases, but everything extracted, and no FTF. No to figure out how to sight in the laser.
