Picked up the 7.62x39 this morning.
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:56:31 AM »
Brand new in the box.  Thanks to the communication on this forum and 3 members here.  Well, now I've got some pleasant work to do.  Cleaning, scope mounting...it's only a 3-9X50 Tasco, bore sighting, sighting in and breaking in the barrel..  Ray Atwood is my FFL and owner of Rock River Outfitters here on "Da U.P."  I not only got the rifle, but for another 80 bucks I picked up 4 boxes of Win. white box .223s, 100 .223 once fired brass, 4 boxes of 7.62x39 mil surp, a box of Rem. 12 ga #6 Game loads, and a bunch of Win. small pistol primers.  Am I happy ??? ???  You betcha ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

If any of you have dreams, hopes or plans to hunt big game on Michigan's Upper, contact Ray at 1-906 477-6091.  He's got a huge success rate on black bear.  He baits 3 stands per hunter.  He just went through a knee replacement and I told him I'd give him a hand this Fall. In addition to all the above, you'll never meet a finer gentleman......an dats da truf.

Yeah, sure Tim.....if it doesn't work, my buddy owns a Chinese Ack Ack gun that'll shoot it.  I got rid of my AKs and SKSs long ago and bought real rifles......Handis.  I thought that.....if they would fire......it might help to break in the bore with the FMJs; take away the milling roughness, etc.  Right now, I'm going out to get the mail and lay a few of those mil surps through it...without a scope...I'm a fair shotgunner.

Pete,

Congrats on the new firearm, but I can't believe you are not going to spend at least 3 days polishing the bore prior to your first shoot! ;D

Hey, I just put 6 mil surps through it and double surprise.  They all fired fine, and the baby is an extractor, not an ejector.  I thought I was going to have to do a conversion on it.  I totally hate ejectors.  Now I'm definately a happy camper. ;D ;D

Pete,
Don't tell anybody but the 7.62x39mm is the "MOST" accurate H&R.
I did not try any milsup ammo.
Only tried handloads with the Barnes bullets.
Hard to measure the groups because holes always touching.  :)

I've got a 7.62x39 in the "other" brand and like Mike says... it's a shooter and mine fires the mil surp stuff without a hiccup.

Pete,

Mama lives in a small town called "Lake" in Michigan on route 10 about 10-20 miles west of Clare, Michigan.
And about 720 miles from where I am in Virginia.
Fun day tomorrow driving.

What is a Rossi??? (Isn't that a banned word here)

Oh man... you just got me gigglin' with that one. :D :D
Yeah it's one of the "R Word" guns. I wanted a handi and looked for almost a year for one... I just couldn't find one that anyone would part with and none in the local shops... I finally gave in and settled for the othe gun.
It's not as bad a gun as some say but I like my handi's alot more.

Mike,  isn't the original Jay's Sporting goods in Clare, or am I wrong?  If it's there, it's a gottabe stop.  Have a safe trip and hug Mama from all of us.

All I can say BB, is "Si Senor".  Where'd he get that???

Spanky, I can't begin to tell ya how thrilled I am to have found mine.  NIB, never fired...until now. AND an extractor to boot.  I thought all the older ones were ejector.  No open sights, which is good cause I can't use em.

This experience points up the value of this forum.  How in Hades would I have found a 7.62X39 in Killeen TX without the guys here?  Guns Galore MAILED it to my FFL on Saturday and I had it in my hands this morning.  They are super folks to do business with.  Talk to David, if ya call.........oh yeah.....I gotta believe it's gonna shoot.  I was hitting bottle caps at 20 yards with no scope or sights.

Thanks all of you on GBO.  You're special people,  special friends and very much appreciated.

I'm going down to Grayling next month, so I'm gonna stop at Jay's in Gaylord and stock up on powder, bullets and primers.

I got the scope mounted, bore sighted and printing a one hole group at 50 yards with cheap junk steel cased Russki ammo.  Tomorrow I'll drag everything out to the bench and see how she does at 100.  Two months ago I thought I'd never find Handis in .30-30 and 7.62X39 and now I have both.  I didn't get squat for Father's Day.  Patty says I had Birthday, Father's Day and Christmas all rolled in one since my birthday last April and I ain't gettin no more :'( :'(......2 rifles.....and the reloading stuff is still pouring in ::) ::)  Please don't mention that to her :o

He seemed to walk a little taller, his stride had purpose. After a few boxes of shells and a box of clays.

Pheasants Forever in tandom with the MN DNR hosts a youth hunt,,planted birds, dog's, they all get a shot or two. He was the only one in his group of 3 to connect twice, then without prompting, he gave away one of his birds to one of the group with nun. We got invited back.
I've been grooming him for years, he's hooked but good.  ;D  By sticking with the single shot's, all his life, I've been able to develop quite a marksmen. He got a little bucky when all his peers where getting semi auto 22's, but then he saw them shoot.
He lives with mom and step dad on a little hobby farm, there ain't no pidgons in that barn.  ;)

Best part is his cross-dominate, he shoot left, He and I can cover a field really well, it's Handi  :D

Glad to  hear of your good luck finding a  7.62X39  Handi

The 7.62X39  is a very nice case for cast / wheelweight type lead,      And can be shot near  full load with gaschecks...   about 9 to 15 cents a round  for, primer - powder - gascheck..         I like the  C.E. Harris  design mold that Lee has --- in a tumble lube 160 gr -- in my SKS. (just fast enough to run the action).

If you want to try a few,  I  can mail you  a few cast bullets  ----

There are a lot of folks that think cast and rifles don't mix .... And there is a limit to what can be done with cast...mostly lower presure and under 2000 fps  -- great for shooting paper targets

Dan, I don't shoot much paper.  Usually just enough to get it where I want it.  Most times I shoot is to draw blood.  When I do shoot target, it's to see where I'm at with a particular load at 200 or 300 yards.  The 7.62X39 is going to be interesting.

I appreciate the offer of the bullets.  That is extremely good of you.  I'll talk to you about it in the morning.

Thanks,

Pete

Pete I am glad your 7.62 isn't giving you any problems, I had one and it had headspace problems you wouldn't believe! I guess my only options are to get a stub job, a Rossi, make up one for one of my Mausers, do a chamber insert, or go for a bolt. I just want one that has a 308. bore. The bolts are expensive, and I have seen Ruger has it back this year in a Compact.

Where do you find a 7.62x39 NIB?

Didn't they stop production a few years back?

Is this just some forgotten inventory?

Or is it a stash that was supposed to be worth more in a few years?

Inquiring minds want to know! :)

Hey Brian , yes it was a limited production, sadly  :-\ many wish they would make more, but certain issues plagued them

Brian, one of the guy's found them at Guns Galore in Killeen TX.  I believe they had 3 and 3 of us snagged them for 259.95 each.  I'd be out shooting it today, but it's Wifey Do Day.....lawn, garden etc. :'( :'(

It was a nice Father's day.  I dragged out the rototiller, but the garden was too wet to till and plant.  Instead we went to "The Farm" in Manistique and got flowers for the porch rails and hanging baskets.  We then had a superb lunch at Marley's Bar and Grill.  We did some erands in town, came home showered, got dressed, picked up our son Jay and his Lady.  We went to Chamberlain's Old Forest Inn in Curtis for lobster, shrimp and filet mignon.......I'm still stuffed. ::) ::)  It was a great day considering I never fired a round ;D...........a tad on the expensive side though :'(
