Handi S&W 500
« on: June 12, 2010, 05:04:06 AM »
I came accross a .500 Handi rifle in great shape for a pretty cheap price and am thinking about picking it up. But what receivers did these come on, an SB1 or 2. I really only want the receiver and stock if it is an SB1 and would probably trade the barrel for something different or just sell it. Any thing to look out for on the .500 models?

SB1 is the shotgun frame SB2 is the center fire rifle frame 44mag and 357mag to my knowledge are the only cartridges that come on an SB1. There is a thing in the faqs that shows how to visually tell the diffrence between the two.

I'm pretty sure a .500 on an SB1 frame is an accident waiting to happen.

I couldn't afford enough brass to make owning it worthwhile. :'(  I" know .50 cal. bullets aren't cheap either.

I was tempted to buy a 500 recently until I looked up the cost of brass and bullets and compared them to the 45 LC which is very economical to shoot if you reload.

I got one in the works now.  Barrel chopped to 16", drilled and tapped for scout scope, and duracoated.  Paid $62 for 100 new primed winchester brass and $32 for 50 440gr cast performance WFNGCs.  Not terribly high.  I figure this is all the brass I will ever need cause I'm not gonna run at max pressures.

Western sells a box of 50 440gr gas checked for $12 plus shipping, I haven't used them tho, but have lots of his other bullets.  ;)

Ranger Rick's 440gr have been reported to shoot well in the 500 Handi before, I think that's what CW shoots in his. http://www.lsstuff.com/ranger-rick/

$32 for 50 bullets? :o  "Not terribly high"?  Man, that's outa my league.  When I own a gun for which the bullets are $64/100, that gun's gotta go.

Western has the best prices on .500 bullets and other calibers too. I buy all my cast from them. All are excellent quality. On the 340 grain 500's, the actual weight of mine was 367 grains. No biggie just FYI. They shoot great over 15.0 grains of Unique for approx 1250 fps. Nice mild load.
