took the .45 lc to the range
« on: June 10, 2010, 12:51:03 PM »
Well I went to the range today to shoot some guns I haven't had a chance to mess with yet.  But those bastards would only let me on the pistol range which has a max of 30 yards.  I would of liked to have got it on the 50-100 yard range but no dice.  Anyway, it was fun to shoot... It did group ok.. just high.  I want to get some peep sights or some optics on there cause my eyes suck with the factory sights.  The range guys couldn't believe that the rifle was capable of taking a deer at 80-100 yards let alone 30.

But I did get my .22 bolt sighted in.  A 3 shot hole that was pretty tiny, with Wolf Match Target ammo.

I ran into a similar asshat working in a big gun store here in NH. He was working the reloading supply counter. I asked him for some 0.452" 300 grain jacketed bullets. He casually asked what I was using them for. I told him I wanted to work up some deer hunting loads for my .45 Colt Carbine. He looked at me funny and replied "I have to question the lethality of that round for deer hunting".

I proceeded to tell him that I only planned on using it at 100 yards or less and that I was loading from the Ruger-T/C section of the reloading manual and reminded him that I was using a 20" barrel. I even rattled off a bunch of different velocity/weight figures I had remembered from the reloading manual and proceeded to calculate the kinetic energy numbers for him which were all above the silly "magic" number of 1000 foot pounds that people like to use.

It did not matter how many facts I threw at this clown, all he wanted to tell me was that my choice of caliber was no good for killing deer. He then proceeded to talk about how I needed a 30-06 so I could make 500 yard shots. I told him that I was more into hunting than long range shooting and reminded him that we live in New Hampshire where 80% of the land is wooded and 500 yard shots don't exist then walked off.

Would yall put a scope on one of these rifles, or go with some style of peep sights?

I understand your feelings...but some of us don't see open sites the way we used to and would like to use a Carbine Classic. I have one and will be putting a scope on it soon. It won't necessarily be permanently deflowered...no lasting ill effects.

With my eyes I haven't shot open sites in well over a decade. I'm a firm believer in functionality over aesthetics. I will even be scoping my newly acquired Hawkins 50 cal percussion rifle.

My BC Carbine wears a red dot.  I don't like the looks of it, but as the others have mentioned it works well with my old eyes and the deep woods hunting I plan to do with it.  I have never scoped a traditional muzzleloader, I'm selling them first.  The modern inlines wear scopes.

I like my two old El Paso Weavers, one in 2.5X and the other 3X, 1" tubes, short, no objective bell and 'purposeful' looking. They have a great field of view and get on quickly. Im sure there are other similar new scopes. Weaver also had their 'J' series of scopes with a 3/4" tube, but finding mounts to fit the std rail may be troublesome. I have a 3/4" B-6 on my 'BC-Carbine .22WMR' and it looks nice (I think). Redfield used to make some smaller tube (7/8, Frontier?) that would look good due to less 'bulk', again the mount question. As you say, they can come off pretty quick, unless you bed the rail and locktite the screws.
If you have the basic Williams peep to replace the rail and a high enough front sight to go with it you will have better luck than the std opens, most likely.
But, once you have a scope on it, I bet you leave it on.

Stillborn, you mentioned that your CR-45 shot high at 30 yards.  Imagine how high it will shoot at 50 or 100!

Anyway, regardless of all of that, I'm wondering how tall your front sight is.  Mine measures something like 0.530" whereas some of the others here have told me that theirs are 0.570".  I've got my rear sight all the way down and it barely makes it on target at 50 yards.  I've even gone as far as taking the elevator out.  I think the solution is a taller front sight.  Nonetheless, I'm just curious to see if you have a shorter front sight as I have on mine, that's all.  Perhaps H&R ran out of the 0.570" Marble's sights and put the shorter fronts on them.  ???  Who knows???

Since this seems to be going in the direction of scope vs no scope on a classic, there was a posting similar to this about a week or two ago.  There are some sights mentioned on it that are a good alternative to a scope.  Here is the link:

I plan on sending that guy a picture of the first deer I get with the .45 Colt.  ;D

The guy not only doesn't know guns, but he doesn't know history either.  He doesn't know the great big critters it has killed or the bad and good guys that fell to it.

With cowboy loads I can do 3" at 100. Im waiting for a couple of new molds. one is a gas check 300gr and the other is a flat base 325 gr. Im working up a load for them. and also planning a tin alloy lead free load. DR
