new handi
« on: June 06, 2010, 09:05:45 AM »
Well I just picked up a NIB .45 Colt Classic Carbine.  It is a pretty slick little gun!  I haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet... work and all.  I was just wondering if the rifle could handle the Buffalo Bore or the Grizzly ammo.  I would like to take it deer hunting this next season.  How would the regular defense ammo work on a whitetail?  Silvertip hollow points or something?

Thanks

I would recommend a a heavy cast bullet or something like a Hornady FTX --- a well constructed bullet.

That is an opinion based off of info I have gathered off this sight and out of magazine articles. I don't even have a 45 colt, but rest assured someone will be by that can set you on the right path.

I thank God everyday for my loving wife and all the fond memories of hunting with my Papa from a child until now.

Please take time to take a kid hunting, it will be a life long memory and blessing for both of you!

Congrats!! ;) The 45 Colt Carbine uses the same SB2 frame as the Handi which is fine with hot Colt loads including BB or Grizzly ammo, mine works fine rechambered to 460S&W, there are several here that have had them rechambered to 454 Casull as well.  ;)

Someone else will address the deer hunting info, only thing I've killed with mine as a Colt or 460 is paper, Colt ruger/TC handloads w/250gr jacketed run 1900fps+ and 1½" at 100yds scoped.

I would not use anything but a cast bullet or a well constructed jacketed bullet for whitetail.  You can shoot an intruder with a .22 short and probably change his mind......You won't dump a deer with it.  Most "Home defense ammo" won't shoot througth drywall for fear of killing someone on the other side of the wall.

Look at in this perspective........you can underkill, but overkill is never too much.  Dead is what you want, and dead is what you get.

Pete's right on the money about some of the home defense ammo... it IS NOT hunting ammo by any means. Now like the others have said... some good cast or jacketed bullets will knock the stuffing out of a deer... or hog... or bear... or elk... or moose... or... you get the idea. :)

Sounds good... I will use the defense and cowboy loads as fodder when I get to go to the range.  Guys at the gun shop recommended the defense ammo.. but those 300gr lead flat points look like they would pack a wallop!  Would yall still try to keep the shot at 100 yards or less with the good stuff like grizzly or buffalo bore?  Should I avoid shoulder shots with this and stick with the lungs, or will it plow right through the shoulders?

And just out of curiosity... is it a pretty pricey process for the change to .454 casull?

The reamer can be rented for less than $50 including shipping, easy to do yourself, same as reaming a 357mag to Max, info in the FAQs including reamer sources, either 4D or ELk Ridge. A gunsmith will charge at least that much, more usually plus the cost of the reamer rental if they don't have it.

Do you gain much more from the switch to .454 in a handi?

A member here chronographed the 325 grain Buffalo Bore Heavy 45 Colt +P through his Handi at over 1700 fps which if you calculate it out gives you over 1000 foot pounds of energy out to 150 yards. The bullet would have a significant drop at 150 yards so my personal limitation would be 100 yards. I shot this load through my 45 Colt Carbine a few weeks ago and got under 2" groups at 50 yards using the factory iron sights.

I would think a good bullet from a 45 Colt would punch a hole clean through a deer at appropriate ranges... even on shoulder shots. There's alot of mass and momentum with the big heavy bullets.

Can't tell ya the 454 does, but 200gr factory Hornady ammo in the 460 does almost 2900fps, 250gr 2450fps.

That's bad, bad news for whatever's on the receiving end of it.
Talk about an awesome woods hunting setup... especially in a short carbine.

What really shines for me about my .45 classic is the fact that factory ammunition seems to have about the same trajectory as .22 long rifle...I have extensive experience with the .22 and i can lob them 45's in there at a couple hunnert yards..Now I am not talking minute of angle, rather minute of coyote or similar ;D...

ok there isn't a deer walking in the woods that can take a solid hit from this bullet @1200-1300 fps if you do your part.pop him behind the shoulder and even stevie wonder could follow that blood trail but I'll bet even money the deer doesn't go 10 yards.
unless your hunting grizz moose or elk no need for the 454.

That is a pretty menacing looking a bullet there.  Do you load your own or is that bad boy off the shelf?
