I just bought some Aguila High Velocity Ammunition 22 LR 38 Grain Plated Lead Hollow Point that others have said is very good.  It is $2.99 per box.  I'm going this Saturday, I'll let you know.

What else is out there that shoots well for under $4?

I just chunked 3 525 count "Thunderbolts".  What a poor excuse for ammunition.

I've had good luck with the Eley copper plated hollow points.  NO misfires, and very accurate.  About $25.00 a brick of 500.

I am sadly out of touch with current pricing so am not sure what it is selling for these days. I've always had excellent accuracy from CCI mini mag ammo and the HP for some reason is a bit more accurate in guns I've owned than the solids. I used it in NRA silhouette competition for years.

I've also used Winchester solids and got excellent accuracy. My best friend Billy Doss (now deceased) used Winchester Wildcat and if there was a difference other than mine were copper washed and his not I couldn't tell it.

Generally speaking the bulk pack Federal HPs from Wal-Mart are accurate enough for most any chore.

I've probably still got close to 10,000 rounds of the Winchester and Federal stuff left so likely won't be buying anymore soon. I generally try to buy a case of 5000 at a time as you can get better pricing that way. They also tend to last a good while especially these days with no more than I tend to shoot. Back when I was active in competition I had to pick up a couple cases a year.

I've always had good luck with CCI mini-mags also but I have not seen any on the store shelves lately so I don't know what it cost now.  I always buy .22lr in bulk rather than by the 50 round boxes anyway.  It's more cost effective, besides I'm just getting warmed up after the first 50 rounds with my .22s.

Those Aguilas have Eley written on the side of the brick. I'm guessing that Eley makes them?

Absolutely try the Winchester Power Point. I have shot it in about a dozen different .22's and it shoots well in all of them, in some of my guns it shoots better than the Eley and Lapua I've tried. It probably won't win you an IR 50/50 match but for the money I don't think you will be disappointed.

Each 22 rifle is different in what it likes, but generally the target stuff is most accurate (consistent), followed by the standard velocity, the high velocity, then the hyper velocity stuff.  That said, one of my most accurate loads in my most accurate 22 (a Kimber Hunter model) is the "velociraptor", a high speed hunting load that should not shoot so well - under 1/2 inch at 50 yards.  A gun writer who's article I just read tested just about every 22 available, with a chart pretty much showing the results I noted above, with enough variations with some of the rifles tested to make it interesting.  Overall, I have had great luck with winchester power points in most of my .22's, as well as the T-22, also by Win.

Well, I just got back from the range.  I shot 6 boxes of the Aguila High Velocity Ammunition 22 LR 38 Grain Plated Lead Hollow Point, and some Winchester Super x 22 LR 40 grain high velocity rated 1300 fps for comparison (40 rounds).

Well, the Aguila was consistently superior.  Though I shot over 300 of the Aquila vs 40 of the Winchester, the Aguila groups out of both a Mark III and a 10 22 (both stock) were superior.  I was shooting off of a benchrest for both.  I didn't bring calipers, but at 25 yards, I was getting about 1/2 inch 10 shot groups with the aguila, and as good as my eyes would do with iron sights on the pistol, about 1 inch.  The Winchesters were about 50% larger out of both the pistol and the rifle.  One important note is that the Wins were "super speed" high velocity.  Anything HV has produced larger groups for me than standard velocity.

Interestingly, I gave 10 to a guy with a CZ to try against his Wolf target ammo, and the Aquila was at least equal.

So, for $33, I'll definitely buy more.

Pretty impressive.

I bought one of everything, ranging from Blazers at $ 1.77 per 50 from Midsouth Shooters Supply to Remington Club by Eley at $ 9.99 per 50 from the local gun boutique; sub-sonic, std, and hyper velocity.

Shot them through my new CZ 452 and my 10-22 in 5 shots groups at 20 and 50 yds.

Out of the CZ, the Blazers and the Remington Club were equally awesome. Guess which I bought 1500 of.
Out of the 10-22, Remington Club was slightly better than Blazers, but CCI Velocitors offered Minute of Critter accuracy.

So I decided the CZ would my range plinker with Blazers and the 10-22 would be for hunting with Velocitors.

I found the CCI Mini Mag for $6.49 per 100 round box yesterday.  I've had good luck with CCI in all my handguns.

I shoot a lot of rimfire.
I like the Remingtons golden bullets as they are cheap and accurate.  But I do get about 3% fail to fire.  most will shoot as you spinn the round.
Saying that I have not has a CCI ever not fire on the first round.
I do shoot a lot of CCI stuff as well and most of the 100 round boxes are around 7- 9 bucks.
You did say dependable.
Of the Aguilla stuff i have shot it was good.  Smells like burnt plastic or wax.  But I do not remember any of the Colibri bricks not firing, the SSS I have had only a couple bricks of trying to make them work well.  and the one brick I had of the 40 grain stuff did not like to feed in any of my semi autos.  But worked well in the bolts.  Can not remember if any went snap rather than bang cause of the trouble getting them to feed in the Buck marks, and 10/22's  (yes I know this is a pistol question but I do not know of anyone that has a 22 pistol and not a 22 rifle.

My MK11 doesn't like the remmies at all, neither does my Marlin mod 60. Too many FTF and squib loads. It likes Federal HP in bulk or winnies in bulk. Bulk is all I buy, except for the cci velocitors, cat loads. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I sat down at the rimfire range yesterday to shoot my new Mark III.  Looking around, I saw several loaded 22 LR cartridges lying around.  I decided to pick up a few, then a few more.  Then, I walked down the line, and they were everywhere.  I found about 40, without looking hard (people really should pick up their squib loads).

Guess what....EVERY one was a Remington.  Given that they were all down the line, I had to surmise that they were shot by several different people.

Admittedly, they were all but two "thunderbolts".

Always get great accuracy and reliability from Federal bulk packs. Still about $15.00 for 550 at Wally World when you can find them.

Wally raised the price to $19 a brick, suddenly, they now have plenty. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(
