Front sight question?

Ok this one may seem strange to some of you but here goes.

I have a 308 Survivor that I would love to put iron sights on. This rifle is compact and light and just begs for a sighting system that is along the same lines. I am planning on a Williams FP with target knobs for the rear. I am only held up with what sort of front sight I should put on the front. With the barrel being .800 at the muzzle I think a ramp would be out of the question although that would be the easy mounting system (just D&T 1 hole). So the other option is to cut a dovetail 1/2" back from the muzzle.

So what do you all think, would a ramp work or do I need to cut a dovetail?

Try a Williams Shorty 12 ga. SG ramp with the sight of your choice installed for proper heigth with the rear sight. I have this combo on my 44 mag barrel. There are many types of rear sights to choose from.

My 44 wears a 30-40 krag 1896 rear sight.

Thanks Lefty.

I really Like the FP sight I have used them in the past and like it. Plus after 14 years of shooting Uncle Sam's rifles I am spoiled on rear peeps with adjustment knobs. ;D

How tall is that ramp? I found one on midway that is .100 tall http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=763623

Go to the Williams Site. They have all the info for measuring and selecting the proper heights of front & rear sights. All you need is a caliber to measure the required points of reference.

I did this for my selection and the measurements came out spot on for my front sight selection.

The SG shorty sight looks good on the wide barrel.

I am going to install the 20 ga. Shorty on my .308 non-bull barrel.

Just take your time, make the necessary measurements and you will be pleased with your results.

Ok I couldn't find the sight you are talking about on their site so gave them a call. They were most helpful. I was able to figure out what i need in the way of a front sight to make this work. This is gonna be fun now to just get the parts together. ;D

A ramp will be the best choice with that peep, otherwise the front sight in a dovetail will look like a 'guthook' (if you could even find a sight tall enough).
I think you will like the set up youve chosen.

Yep going with a ramp. The Gent at Williams was even nice enough to give the part number I will need(47452 for the 20ga shorty if any are interested). I agree I think this is gonna be a much better set up the having a bulky scope on top. ;D
