357 mag or 357 max
« on: May 29, 2010, 03:09:58 PM »
I just got a new 357 mag NEF handi and it seems the chamber is cut deep enough for a 357 max round I dont have a 357 max round to see if it would fit I tryed to measure it by seating a bullet in a empty brass with a 158 g bullet as far out of the brass with out falling out the bullet does not touch the lands. What would be the best way to measure it to see if a 357 max would fit

Seems the H&R .357 mag has a long throat.  I checked .357 max brass before I lengthened the chamber.  Case went in all but about 1/4 inch.  Probably would have chambered .360 brass.  Didn't check with a loaded round though.  Max Reamer did take a fair bit of metal out.

357 Mag  1.290"

357 Max  1.605"

Things aren't always what they seem. My 357 Mag barrel has a longer than normal chamber and 360 DW brass fits in there empty, but not when it has a bullet loaded. There's something about how the throat (more like forcing cone) is cut that allows the brass to fit without a bullet. Bullet seating depth doesn't matter. In the end, I had to trim my DW brass 0.010" to make it work in the MAG chamber. There's a ton of info out there on the GBO archives that discusses the chamber length issue. Most fix all their problems by reaming the chambers to the MAX. It makes great use of the longer chamber and improves the throat issues, making the 38cal trio of cartridges shoot better.

Thanks, Dinny

Max, max, max, all I ever here around here is MAX!! ;D

Now you guys got me thinking I need to measure the cylinder length of my model 28-2 S&W.  Just think of the possiblities if the cylinder is long enough, I can screw up six rechambers on one reamer rental.  :P

Both my chambers are already reamed, so I can't answer the question.

Tom, I'm not familiar with the 28-2  I'd seat brass in the cylinder and measure what's left.  I think a bullet would protrude and stop the cylinder from turning.  Also, even if it worked, I'd only load light loads in it.........me thinks ???

Just as well as I have a lifetime supply of donated Bullseye and a max. load doesn't fill up 1/2 a 357 mag case.  The 28-2 has a very stout cylinder with recesses for the rim so I think it would be fine with increased pressure.  The cylinder not being able to rotate would be a problem. ::) Probably should leave it alone, I only had one point deducted for accuracy in the last club shoot, out of 42 shots.

Wouldnt you think the factory could/would/maybe now(?) be more aware of what to use for 'proper' chambers? But, these rifles, just like B&S lawnmower engines and Timex watches, often work in spite of themselves.
This wouldnt be the first time that a .357Mag chambered rifle has a poorly chosen throat. There were a batch of Ruger No.1s(?) that Ed Harris worked on that all benefited from rethroating (this was before the Max craze, I think).
Frugal though I am, the reports here of better accuracy by Max'ing lead me to believe it is a throat issue, and if it is holes in the right place you want, do what it needs to get them there.

My 357 will accept 360 brass with a 180 gr. bullet loaded to the cannelure, will accept 357 max. with a .010 trim on the brass.  This is the factory cut chamber.  It still shoots will with everything I load in it.  Will shoot 38 plinkers to less than 2" at 50 yds.  Will shoot 357's to 1" at 100 yds.
