Question about a Ruger Charger......
« on: May 28, 2010, 01:17:04 PM »
Hello everyone.  I have a question for you all.  Do any Charger owners shoot their Chargers standing, like a conventional pistol?

The reason I ask is I was thinking of possibly buying a 6" bull barrel for the Charger and trying to shoot it like a pistol.  Thinking the shorter barrel would balance the gun a little better.

What do you all think?

I think the Charger is an odd species: neither fish nor fowl.  I have come close to getting one a couple times, but can't figure out how to really shoot it, and can't figure out what I would do with it.  This should be an interesting thread.

I agree with Keith, when I first saw one at a gun show, my first impression was fantastic. Then I tried to get interested in buying one, and couldn't figure out what to do with it. It is obvious though that after thinking it over for some time, I would likely end up shooting from the bench at 50 yards. Just for fun, a relaxing day at the range kind of gun. I am a big fan of Rugers, so if one day I find myself with a unneeded stap of cash in my pocket I might get one. Of course Ruger could do what they have done so well many times before. They could discontinue them and instantly turn them into desirable collectibles. :-\

Too big to be a handgun and not as versatile as a carbine IMO.   I don't see a need for it myself but different strokes for different folks as the saying goes.  I have a 10/22 with a folding, pistol gripped stock that I think will do all that the Charger will do and more.

While I do not have a Charger I do have a long barreled Buck mark with the forend.
After seeing a picture of a Marine sniper in a kneeling position with his left arm on his left knee and had with the rifle on his left arm and he was holding onto his right wrist.
For a while I had a Scout scope on the Varmint model and I would rest the fore arm of the pistol over my left elbow and grasp my right arm with my left hand.  Using a modified position I saw the sniper using.  Then for a while I had a red dot on the gun and that too worked.
Now it only wears its iron sights.
With the Buck mark I worried about the slide hitting me and set up the Scout scope so it was not in focus unless i was far enough back.
With the Challanger you do not have this problem as it has a captured bolt.
OH with the short rifle I was shooting in events against guys with scoped rifles and holding my own.  I found the crossed arm position was stable, fast to get on target and easy to shoot.  If you have a Red dot or a medium focus scope, it may work for you.
