Range Report - 223 Ultra and .30-30 Hunter
« on: May 28, 2010, 09:25:55 AM »
I finally got to the range this morning with my two newest Handis.

First up was the .30-30 Hunter with pallet-wood stocks.  Finding a load for this rifle has been problematic, but I had some reloads set up for a ladder test.  Remington Brass, CCI primers, RL15 powder and Hornady 155 A-Max bullets.  The ladder test went fairly well, with the loads from 34.8 to 35.4 grains showing promise.  I'll have to continue my research in that range.  I suspect the scope is causing me some problems on that rifle.  It's an old Tasco 4-12 and I'm not convinced that it's holding a zero.  Still, the rifle shot better today than it has in the past.  It's simoly a matter of finding the load.

I had brought out some old .30-30 cat-sneeze loads that feature a 115 grain lead bullet (for .32-20) and 0.7 cc of Blue Dot.  The range had some falling plates set up at 25 yards and I started knocking down plates with those lead bullets.  Lots of fun and easy shooting.

After I finished playing with the cat-sneeze loads, I put the .30-30 away and got out the .223 Ultra.  I don't reload for that caliber yet, so I brought factory Remington 55 grain and a Federal 55 grain bulk pack.  After I aligned the scope and settled down on the bags with a 100 yard target posted, I began with the Federal bulk pack.  I could get the first two shots almost touching, then the 3rd and 4th shot opened the group to about 3 inches.  I let the barrel cool then went to the Remington ammo.  Same pattern.  The first two shots would be very close, the 3rd and 4th would open the group.   If my experience is any indication, the .223 is a "cold-barrel" gun.  Once the barrel heats up the group starts wandering.

Interesting day at the range.  I learned a lot about the little rifles and burned some powder.

My son came along and shot his Savage 7mm Magnum at varying ranges.   He's in his early 30s and he can shoot that rifle.  He shot a couple of groups at 300 yards that you could cover with your fist.  It was a lot of fun watching him shoot and spending time with him.

I'm surprised you're having a hard time finding a load for the 30-30. Mine will shoot just about anything with excellent accuracy as will most 30-30 Handi's. :-\

That's what's leading me to believe I have a scope problem rather than a rifle problem.  I've never had this much trouble getting a rifle to shoot, and the scope I have mounted is an ancient Tasco.  I really think that the scope isn't holding the zero.

Dennis,

Send me your 30-30 and I'll let you know what the problem is in about 3 or 4 years. ;D

Interesting, I get 3 out of mine,,back to back,, then she starts the stringin. Cool'er down and it's 3 more.
The 708 throws the first shot 3" low, then will group the next 20. Guess which shot the scope will be set for come season?

Still can't get that darn 308 to settle into anything better than the factory 2"s@100. Quite unsatisfactory after the great groups I get with the other 2. I even did a warrenty exchange for my scope thinking that was the problem, no change. (but I got a new scope)
I'm gonna swap frames this weekend an see if that does it. I'm not getting a good latch/shelf fit with the current frame. It locks up and I have no pop-open issues, but it's only contacting about 1/3 on one side. Something's just not right,,

PawPaw, any day at the range is good day, with a son makes it a SUPER DAY. My oldest is about to retire after 20+ year in the Army,no2 is far away in FL. school teacher,my youngest is close by,but works all the time like his old man  ;D. But come next April going to hang it up,and then should have the time to visit and do some real shooting  :).

Try a load of 3031 28gr. and almost any 150gr. bullet,it works good in all my rifles. Later Tom Ham7777

MY .308 shoots into two inches with monotonous regularity with my standard .308 loading.  I picked up the rifle for a grandkid to shoot if one of them hunts with me and never saw any reason to do any particular load development for that particular rifle.   Will it do any better?  I don't know, never tried to mess with it.

Mine is very simular, the first shot is generally half inch low and right, then two almost in the same hole.  The next couple will hold within about an inch or so of the first three, then it is anybody's bet where the next one will hit.    Next range trip I'm going to try 5 minutes between shots to see what happens.
