Bought Another .45-70 (picture added)
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:38:20 AM »
From hellbilly075 this time.  It's my first H&R that is marked NY made.  I'm really pleased with it and I think the fit & finish are better than ever.  My walnut Topper Classic stock set looks really nice on it as does the Nikon 2-7X32 Prostaff in vintage Weaver Tip-Offs.  My 12 gauge interchangeable choke barrel fits it too.  I want to get a front barrel band so I can use a sling without drilling the forend.  I can't live without a .45-70 Handi it seems.

No pics, didn't happen.   ;D

The .45-70 is just the best, isn't it?  I'm starting to think that one isn't enough.

Swampman,

Glad you found a gun you like, make up a little for all those leverguns you sold.  45/70 is very addictive, I had never shot one before this year and now I have already shot over 300 rounds and have another 200 rounds sitting on the shelf ready to go.

The light was really bad but here's a pic.  It doesn't do the stock justice.

Dinny,
How much penetration did you get on that starling?  Was it a one shot kill.  Did you take pictures.  Closest i ever came to that was being up in the Trinity Alps by myself and watching the trout ignore a worm and hook for two days.  I baited a stick of dynamite with a 30 second fuse and caught dinner by wading in and picking them up a few minutes later.

If that stock looks as good in person as it does in your photo, it's a real improvement.  I like it a lot.

Enjoy it!

Swampi nice lookin 45-70. I did a trade deal for an older 45-70 with the older style synthetic stock. bought a weaver #82 scope mount and cut a new slot in it and mounted a Simmons 4X32 Pro Diamond so it sits in front of the hammer spur. Great minds think alike because the next thing I did was put a TDC stock set on it. One 45-70 isn't enough, one the same day I did the trade my 45-70 manlicher arrived at my FFL. The manlicher sports a Nokon Pro Staff 2X7X32. Sooner or later my kid is gunna shoot one of these and I,m guuna loose it to him.

Dinny I'm just itching to see a woodchuck in my back yard.

IMO you just can't beat the Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32 for these guns.

Swampman,

I have you tried the nikon fixed 4 power, 32MM?  I think it is in the Prostaff series.  I have never owned or shot a Nikon but thinking of trying one on my 18.5" 45/70.  The old weaver I have doesn't have enough eye relief for me.

thanks

I hear they work well but the parallax is set at 75 yards I believe.  That's fine for a .45-70 IMO.  They cost about the same as the 2-7X32 so I usually just get the latter.

The 2-7x32 Shotgun scope is parallax free at 75yds, makes little difference on a big game scope and is very accurate as demonstrated by the 100yd groups my 30-30 Ackley Handi will shoot, have one on my 500S&W Handi as well, although it's not quite as accurate.  ;)

The 4x32 rimfire scope is set at 50yds.
