Who owns a Howa rifle, and what do you think of them?  I'm thinking of buying a heavy barrel 22-250 for prairie dogs.

Had one as a Weatherby Vanguard chambered in 7mm rem mag.  Very accurate (3 shots in a quarter @ 200yds), didn't like the safety (too high, can be tripped by a branch) and the stock was a Ramline, it was hollow for weight reduction and type of material used, made it noisy.

I have the same model you are looking at in 223. I love mine. Trigger came from the factory set right at 3lbs. It's pretty accurate too. I wouldn't want to use it as a walk about varminter because it's pretty heavy, but for a bench rifle it's great for the money.

I had a Vanguard that is basically the same gun.  That was very accurate for a $388 Walmart gun.  I kick myself for getting rid of it so much so I have ordered a Howa barrelled action in 300WSM.  I will be getting a Boyd Ross laminate and topping it off with a Zeiss Conquest.

I've used Howa 1500's in .300 Win Mag and .30-06.  Both were exemplary.   Very reliable and accurate.  The Howa has some very useful ergonomic features that have gone largely unnoticed by the conventinal gun press.

One is the large ejection port, which facilitates loading with gloves and in cold weather.   The floor plate release is one of the better ones in use in my experience.

I also like the length and shape of the bolt handle.  It seems slightly longer than Win or Remington and this increases leverage when you're opening the bolt  from the "fired" position and you have to cock the firing pin on the upstroke.  Furthermore,  I find the pear shapted bolt handle to be attractive and comfortable.

Another feature is that their magazines seem to be longer than others. This allows long seating of bullets in the casings if you wish to have the chambers "reamed out" for a longer over all cartridge length.   In my .300 Win Mag and in my 30-06, I am able to seat bullets "further out" to achieve greater powder capacity and longer over all length of the cartridge.

As also noted by others, the Weatherby "Vanguard" is simply a Howa bolt action sold under the Weatherby brand name.  I have no personal experience with the Vanguard, but a hunting companion has one in .300 Wby Magnum which he loves for elk hunting using 200 grain Nosler partition bullets in Federal Premium factory loads.

Hope this information is helpful to you in evaluating the Howa 1500/Vanguard rifles.

Gopherboy,

The Howas are good quality guns that are fairly priced.  In my eyes, I rate them as the Japanese version of a Tikka.  Don't get me wrong, I think that the Tikka is a better rifle.  It's just that the Howa is, in my eyes, kinda like a Japenese version of it.

I have a Smith & Wesson 1500 which is a Howa under the S&W name.  I ordered it as a barrled action in 30-06 and had a custom stock put on it.  Mine came with a detachable magazine which is nice.

There was a recall a year or so ago.  I don't recall what the problem was.

My son has shot about 10 deer with mine so I gave it to him.

I also have a S & W 1500 in 7 MM Mag. Mine was one of the first few made and shoots like a dream.. I've been offered on th 5K for it but there is no way I'll ever part with that rifle. Don't even feel any recoil when I shoot it.. It is topped with a Redfield Rangefinder Scope..

I really wish I'd gotten one while they still made it in 6.5x55.  They've dropped it from the catalog at this point :(.  It's looking like Tikka, Ruger, and CZ are about the only makers still making a rifle in that chambering available in the US.
