.223 1 in 9 or 1 in 12 twist?

My local dealer has a H&R in stock in .223 caliber. I am considering purchasing it. Is there a quick and easy way to tell if it has the 1 in 12 twist rate or the 1 in 9 twist rate?

In any case, anybody know which twist rate would work best for Federal 55 grain Bulk (from Walmart)? I have a LOT of the Federal Bulk in my safe that I will be shooting if I purchase the rifle.

From my experience the 55gr bullets are a good all around weight.  They are the upper end weight for a 1 in 12 and a lower end weight for a 1 in 9.  Though they will likely perform better out of the 1 in 12.

Im hoping that maybe there is a way to tell which barrel this one has. Maybe by serial number or markings on the barrel? I will be looking at it again later tonight.

Take a cleaning rod to the dealer and check the twist for yourself .The how to check twist rate is in the "faq's and help PLEASE READ ME" topic. There really is no better way to know for sure. Kurt

Welcome! If it's an ejector, it will likely be 1:12", if extractor it's more likely 1:9", but there are no guarantees, H&R doesn't even know, best advice has been given, check it with a rod per the FAQs.  ;)

Tim is right, no guarantee, i have a 1:9 twist 223 with an ejector.

Check the twist yourselff with a fairly tight patch on a cleaning rod that rotates easily, with 12" marked off.

1-9 will shoot just about any bullet weight up to around 70 gr very well and a 1-12 will handle the 40-60 gr just as good for the most part, except the longest 60 gr hollow points and not too bad for the stubby Speer and Sierra 70 grainers, I shot a lot of those in 220 Swifts 1-14 way back...they helped make tons of venison jerky, steaks and hamburger.

Many of my large cased 22's have/had 1-14, 1-12, 1-10, 1-9, 1-8...most of my small cased 22's have 1-9, 1-12, 1-14...1-9 just because rifle makers jumped on the wagon when the heavier 69 gr military ammo came availabe to the general public...but for 55 gr bullets either twist will work just fine.  Each rifle and barrel length has a preference in bullet weight and velocity. 

The 223 and 55 gr ammo were pretty much developed side by side...in 1-14 twist barrels and for the most part(B4-69) ALL 22'c unless custom made had 1-14 twists up to a certain time...going way back to 220 Swift and 22-250.  My TC Encore OEM 22-250, now 22-243 Midd, has a 1-12 twist...it shoots the 60 gr Hornady hollow point well enough even.

Hey...if the price is right, buy it...either way you wil have the basis for a very nice bigboytoy.
