Great Beginer/Backup Bow
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:59:31 AM »
I wanted a good takedown bow to carry as a backup and came accross the Samick Sage.  I decided to give it a try because basically the cost and was more than pleasantly surprised with this bow.   If you are thinking of trying traditional archery or need a backup bow like I did, let me recommend you check out this bow.  3 Rivers has them for under $120 + shipping.

That is an awesome deal, and I may just order two of them for that price.  I need one that I can travel with, for when I go back over to Hawaii as one will be left at the house that my buddy owns.

Thanks for the heads up, as I look at 3Rivers al the time, but had not noticed this one.

You had to didn't you ... I've been on the fence for most of the last year about getting back into archery, and you had to go and post this. It looks perfect for my son and I to shoot out at the park in Mililani (hey montanan, where in HI are you coming to?). Thanks for the post!

TeamNelson

This next time over I want to go to Moloka'i, before the Big Island where we usually stay in Kona.  We have been to O'ahu, and Maui and then usually hop over to the Big Island.  But goats, and hogs are on the bowhunting agenda for this guy.  I'm hoping this next trip over we can secure our home site there in Ocean View Estates, but we will see.

Wow, small world.  I spent three years in Hawaii while in the USAF in the 80's.  Seeing you guys talks about places I've been was really unexpected when I start this thread.

Wow, yeh! I'm in my second consecutive tour here. First at KBay, now at Kunia. Haven't been yet, but hear there's good pig hunting under the H-3, and up by Kaena Pt. Course some idiot shot a monk seal up by Kaena so folks are twitchy.

Good pig hunting even on public land, watch http://hawaiisportsman.com  I don't know if they still have Ericks videos up or not, but see if they are running still.

Its too bad that Erick lost his life while hunting, as he was such an inspiration to bowhunters of Hawaii.

When I was there, the hogs were all over the place out on Kaena Pt.  I spent many hours out there in my Bronco 4x4ing.  Hunting was hard to come by when I was there, never thought about bowhunting though.  Then again most of my free time was spent either working on my stock car or 4x4ing.  I did have a friend that was orignally from the Big Island and he would go hunt blacktail over there once a year.  Place sounds like it changed some in the last 30 years, there wasn't an H3 when I was there.  I met and married my wife while I was there and we have talked about coming back for one of our anniversies, but haven't yet.  Heck we would likely get lost from what it sounds like.

Hmmmm getting lost maybe on O'ahu yes with its million population, but Maui has the Road to Hana is awesome with places to get off the beaten path.  The Big Island I really like, where hog or pig hunting can be done by a bowhunter 24/7/365 days a year.  Moloka'i is another island that I haven't been to yet, but Fred Eichler with Easton Bowhunting TV has hunted there for goats, and it looks inviting, but I may find my liking more on the Big Island.  I have a place to go, on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island where the pigs come in every night to feed under the big Macadamia Nut tree, as they come out of the cane field and behind the house is avacodo tree's.

I also have areas, over on the Hilo side and in Puna, that I can go to which makes it very nice, but the jungle areas are dense and thick.

But like they say over there, "Its all good"

Aloha

At the risk of contributing to a thread digression  :o......  Tell me more about the game oportunities in the HI islands.  You guys mention hogs and goats (both of which I understand to be non-indigenous species, maybe even considered 'invasive')  How about the humble rabbit?  Are they there?  what other game animals are hunted there?

On the topic of the OP, I like the idea of a takedown recurve and it's hard to beat that price.  I like takedowns for the same reasons I like takedown rifles (easier to get into good hunting areas without alarming the Bambi huggers on the way from the vehicle into the woods) but the bow adds another level.  Archery is allowed in so many places where firearms are not that having a packable bow makes more sense than a packable rifle in some areas.  No point in bringing anything along if you could get all legally jammed up for it.

Never been t' Hawaii, but gettin' back to bows -- I got a Samick Deer Hunter takedown from a little shop out East, and I find it to be as pleasing as the originator of this thread did his. Paid about the same money, and it's pretty smooth, and offers good cast for the draw weight. 60" bow, 40 pounds at 28", draws about 42# at my 29" draw length. Puts 'em where I point it every time.

I haven't heard anything bad about Samick bows and I've been thinking really hard about trying their longbow, but I've got to quit buying other toys.......;)
