Best Value Red Dot/Holo Sight for 500 Mag Handi.....
« on: May 23, 2010, 04:18:43 PM »
Hello everyone.  I have a Handi in .500.  Right now it wears a 2-7x32 shotgun scope.  To make a long story short, I don't like the scope.

Was curious what you all thought would be the best value in a Red Dot/Holo Sight for the 500 Handi??  Looking for one with the least amount of parallax, and smallest MOA dot for the money of course.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Brandon

Hi,

I bought a used Gen II Bushnell Holosight (thanks Dinny) for my wife's M-4.  I installed it but never shot it until a pistol/rifle/shotgun shoot weekend before last.  The club changed the rifle course to knockdown steel targets @ 100 yards and I had brought a open sight 10/22 Ruger, which I was sure would not knockdown the targets at that distance.  I took my wife's M-4 and shooting free hand @ 100 was 1 for 1 on all the steel targets.  It was a very fast acquistion sight.  I played with it later at home and it doesn't have the parallex issues that the red dots i have owned suffer from.  However, this sight does not have a single red dot, but a red circle with a dot inside of it.  My guess is it will be less accurate shooting paper than your present scope.  However, for close range (inside 100 yds) hunting, say pigs, I think it would be great.  Not sure about how it would withstand the recoil of your 500 thumper.

I've got red dots on Handis in .357 Maximum, .45LC and .445 Super Mag.  I like em and don't like em.  They're TruGlo and A1-Optic.  They're larger MOA.  They make it very difficult to shoot anywhere near MOA at 100 yards.  They are excellent in low light.  If I'm still hunting, jump shooting, I like them.  Shots are close and come up quickly, and they find the target easily with both eyes open.  They're plenty accurate enough for that.  If I'm gonna sit in a blind or tree stand all day from dawn til dark, I take two rifles.  One scoped and one with a red dot.  The red dot for close in, dark thirty shots.  The scoped rifle for longer daytime shots.  I have a vision problem, and until I got the red dots, my hunting day was over at 4:30....couldn't see enough through the scope.  The red dots added two hours for me, one in the morning and one in the evening.

The .445 isn't the thumper your .500 is, but it wears a TruGlo, and it hasn't wiggled yet.  Because of brass and ammo scarsity, it hasn't had more than a couple of hundred .445 rounds through it.  It has had hundreds of .44 mags.

This doesn't really answer your questions, but it gives you my experience with red dots.

I have a Tru Glo 2X red dot on my 20ga slugger no issues with recoil it's sighted in for 65 yards and clover leafs at that distance. I might push a shot to 100 yards, but where I hunt 100 yards is a long shot. I think they are $89 at Dicks SG see them on sale for $69 occasionally.

Check into a Vortex red/green dot. I put on on an SKS, and it works better than the others Ive had on it.

I put one of the Tru Glo 2X's on my 444 and it has done great sevice.  It has a 2.5 dot and doesn't cover very much, 2.5" at 100 yd which is fine for hunting. ;)  DP
