What cal to re-barrel to on a Winchester 1895?
« on: May 19, 2010, 01:00:05 PM »
The Winchester 1895 I have is in 270 Winchester and would like it in something bigger, 338/06 Ackley improved or 338 GNR, or your sugestions?

Thanks,

My suggestions would be either the standard .338/06 (A-Square, officially) or 9.3x62.  I would also stay with the smoother feeding standard shoulder cartridge versions rather than an A.I. (and its need for case forming) since within the range limitations of the '95's iron sights, any perceived ballistic gain would never be discernable in field use.

Why would you want to rebarrel a .270 W? You'll be destroying the value and the originality of the 1895... If that is a concern.

I have 3 270's.  Why would you destroy the value of the gun by re-barreling?  I could never understand that one though it must be true.

There's not a whole lot of Miroku/Winchester M1895's in .270, since they were such poor sellers than Winchester returned most (if not all) of their NOS to Miroku in 2001/2002 for conversion to the then "newly in demand" .405 - so, "leaving it alone" does have some merit.

If it's in excellent condition, it may be saleable for enough $$$ to buy a .405, etc.

There were a few conversion articles in RIFLE Magazine back about then, mostly to .375 Hawk/Scovil or the .405 - which would be my preference, having owned a 2002 .405 - but a .35 Whelan is a mighty attractive commercially-available chambering, too.

.35 Whelan would be my choice, but then I'm a sucker for a .35 anything.

Of course, with the number of elk taken each year with the .270, you could just use good 150gr.  loads, kill everything you shoot at and pretend that its a .35 Whelen and live happily ever after.  That is all predicated on you changing the sights with an XS white stripe ramped blade up front, a Williams Foolproof receiver in the rear then adding a barrel band sling swivel and changing out that slick buttplate for a thin rubber one (a much more stable shooting platform).

I'd send it to Jim Dubell and have him rebore it to 35 Whelen given the fact you want a larger bore gun.

I have had the exact same rifle you have rebored, rerifled, then neck reamed for the 35 Whelen. I have never looked back. It has a 1:12 twist to shoot the heavier for caliber bullets. I actually don't see the 35 Whelen as just a deer rifle, shooting 200 gr. bullets as all of the factorys do. My favorite loads in this rifle, ironically, are not the 300 grainers but the Lowly 250 gr. Speer. I also had a bullet mold made @ approx. 260 gr. I have had a few rifles rebored and without question they have all been accurate and this '95 is no exception. CRASH87

Howdy,
A few years back, while writing about M95's, Rick Jamison opined that despite the .405 hype, the best chambering in the 95 was the .35 Winchester. It combined flatter trajectory than the .405 with more energy than the .30-03 or '06. Here we have a long, strong action that is not conducive to the over-bore mounting of a scope. The best we can consider for the long shot is a good receiver sight, like the Lyman reproduction M21.
I'm with you. Your .270 and my .30-06 are best chambered in rifles that allow for a longer shot. I can load mine with 220-grain Remingtons, but I'm thinking about re-boring to .35 Whelan and 250-grain bullets.
It's a little like owning a Ferrari in a town with a 30mph speed limit. What's the point? Might as well have a pickup.

I like the .375 caliber. So will put my two cents in for the 375/06. Frank

35 Whelen. I'm a 35 nut, too. I've considered it on my 1995 30-06 but the ammo cost has kept me from doing it.
Would be a neat set up.
