:D  How is everyone?  Hope the snow hasn't buried anyone yet.  Can't say I've been out much.  I went up north along Hwy 3 scouted a few spots for ptarmigan and fox/coyote.  looks promising.  Watching for private land and municipalities is a pain.  Matt sorry I haven't caught up with you. between work and graduate classes I haven't had much time.  Daveinthebush hope things are finding you well.  Just wanted to say hi and let you all know I wasn't frzen in a glacier or something.  Talk at you'll later. Good to hear form you.  I have been busy putting an addition on the cabin and am almost done with the painting.  Snowed here today too.  I was using the snowbower last night and had a stone get into the tracks.  Now the thing wond go forward anymore.  :(

Had the thing apart a few times and everything spins until I hit the clutch.
Maybe latter I will try again.

Old Moss -- Good to hear from you again.  Thought maybe you were letting work get between you and Alaska.  

Drop by the office sometime soon with your Alaska Gazeteer ad we can do some map recon together.  I'll be happy to show you a few spots you may want to visit.  I leave for SWA in a few weeks so you may want to make it soon.

Those snow blowers are high maintenance machines.  I had to redo the starter on mine  a week ago and we haven't even had enough snow to run the thing. Was just warming it up in case some came.  The 3 inches we had are almost melted away.  Supposed to get 2-4 inches tomorrow.  Just enough to pack down the drive to avoid sucking up rocks and adding to my maintenance bill and busted knuckles.  BTW since you live in SERIOUS snow country  what is the brand of choice in Valdez?  Yeah I know, Cat 988, how 'bout second choice.  The machine I have is the one my dad bought when I left home for college - in 1973 - Gilson 8 hp.  It seems much sturdier than any made now but keeping it functioning is a chore - always something coming loose or needing adjusting.

Well I found a golf ball sized stone in the tracks stopping the thing.  The tension spring on the belt tensioner broke at the same time and I did not know it.  That took a bit to find out but a little more bend in it and were blowing agian.

The prefered machine over here is the Bobcat loader, ifin you can afford one.   :roll: Other guys use 4-wheleers with plows.  I shoveled the 300' drive all last winter except three times when a loader had to be used. Another Alaska phrase: Shoveling snow = Valdez Health Club.

Yea we get a bit but last year was a light year with only about  180".  Kind of short from our 500"+ of snow.  It is pretty though if you can see out the windows!

Yeah those bobcats are ideal for here too- short and maneuverable [sp?] - and the bucket lets you lift the snow up - but I haven't got the $ for one either.

All our snow melted away over the weekend!   There was an ice jam warning for Ekwok up the Nushagak River.  Haven't hear if it broke. Colder today

I hope we get some snow that stays.  Last winter was like this and we had NO berries AT All.

Don't mind the easy heat bill tho.

We had a bit of snow last week, nice temperatures too, even down to 15 degrees on Friday.  Then it started raining again.  I was hoping to have enough snow to go out with the boy and stomp around with the snowshoes and maybe even fire up the snow blower but that is out now.  If we don't get more snow than we have had the past few years I'll ship that thing up to Valdez!

Spent the weekend under the weather and under the Suburban, bleeding brakes.  

I need to get serious about getting a couple of deer in the freezer.  The middle boy is coming home for an early Christmas and he can make one of those critters disappear in one sitting almost!

We're getting plenty of snow up this way Kees.  Quite reasonable temps too.  20's above.  Downright balmy after last weeks -30's.

Our snow is now ice.  In fact my car was just borrowed by one of the people here to take his wife to work, as I have the car chained up.  I durned near fell on my keester this morning coming to work.

Wish I could come back up, but I will never be able to talk the wife into moving up North once again.  I guess I need to get serious about building a boat so I can get out of Dodge...

Old Moss, we'll have to hook up sometime.  I've been wiped out by a sinus infection this weekend, spent 3 days in bed, and still feel only about 1/2 human.

Kees, how about a Tolman Alaskan Skiff?  I started building one two weeks ago.  A good design, and not too hard to build.  I'm building a widebody stretched to 22 1/2' with cuddy cabin and pilot house.  Should keep me busy for the winter, and I'm hoping to have it out on the water next summer.

I had in mind more a 16' sailboat.  4 hp or so 4-stroke to get in and out of the bay when the current is running the wrong way, for the rest it's wind power.  Love those blow-boats! http://www.stevproj.com/PocketYachts.html

A sailboat would be fun.  I just may have to build one in the future as well.  If I lived by the water, I'd definately have to have one.
