Turning tires inside out
« on: May 18, 2010, 07:57:41 AM »
I never done a hole tire, Ive turned one inside out for a tree swing once, I cut the tread off 3/4 the way around when I was done it looked like a akward to carry basket, was a very safe swing for my little kids.

Im interested in doing 3-4 tires to use as garden planters, I figure the depth added to the sides would cut the cold summer time wind's off the Chukchi Sea, the cold temps have a nasty way of burning off tomato plants, I figure to make a lath tripod above the plants and tossing a plastic bag over em when its cold.

The ones that I have seen turned had the wire bead that rides the wheel rim cut out. It always looked to be more trouble than it was worth. They would usually have a design cut on the edge to look better.

If you planted them out of sight you might be able to cut the sidewall all the way around about an inch or so up from the tread and use the tread area alone to do what you want. You could stack them and bolt them together to make a tall planter.

I figure I'll cut the steel bead off one side and attempt to turn it inside out by hand, the tread out to cause it to bulge out and stand up some.

Ive seen farms that had tractor tires and heavy equipment tires turned that way for feed bunks and to feed big round bales, I had always wonderd how they accomplished that.

It may involve tractors and chains and such.

I made a bunch of tomato planters this year by just cutting the bead off both sides at about halfway in the sidewall. I turned one inside out, and after that I figured it wasn't worth the effort. I cut with a saws-all, but did a couple with a sabre saw which seemed to work almost as well.

I saved the beads and layed them upside down in the hole to make the wind break an inch or two higher. My plants have been in the tires about 3 weeks now and are looking pretty good.  I also built a wall along the south side of my lines of tires out of used cement blocks I had. Painted the tomato side red, orange color is supposed to make the maters produce more fruit(couldn't find any cheap orange paint)

So what does the Otz stand for. We lived in Ak for a few years and know a lot of the place names, but I can't place what Otz would stand for.

OTZ is of the airline designation code's commonly used troughout Alaska.

OME is Nome
FAI is Fairbanks
ANC is Anchorage
BRW is Barrow
DLG is Dillingham
OTZ is the land explored by Otto Von Kotzebue for the Russian Czar.

As a interesting side note to the south of OTZ about 40 miles is Eschscholtz Bay and Chamisso Island, 1826 the island was set to meet the Sir John Franklin expidition for the northwest passage by Captain Beechy of 'HMS Blossom' intersting how we have a Cape Blossom??
Not far from Chamisso lay the remains of a burnt whiling sloop 'Louisiana' which struck a shoal and was burned by her crew, one the last ships persued or raided by the Confederate commerce raider CSS Shenondoah a week after the Civil war ended.
Elephant point on the south shore is where they used to mine out all those Mammoth carcases in the 1890's-1900's, the city of Candle a gold mineing town and reputed location of road house once owned by Charles Lindburg of flying fame.

OTZ as Rex knows is the following ICAO for an Airport in AK.

OTZ Kotzebue, AK [Ralph Wien Memorial Airport], USA

ICAO are four letter identifiers for Airport and weather oberservations as well. Like KATL would be Atlanta, GA.

You got the idea, for years OTZ on baggage tags, freight tags & bypass mail is pretty much ingrained round here.
All the villages in the borough.
