Range day(s) with GPR & TC Hawken 54's
« on: May 12, 2010, 02:31:12 PM »
Well after a 7 month tour in the dirtiest sandiest place on this earth (Afghanistan). I hauled my babies outta thier resting home for some good pampering at the range.
I started with my Lyman GPR which I built from a kit. I shot a string of loads starting at 60grs and up to 90grs of Goex fffg.  I settled on 60grs as it gave the tightest groups with my cast .530 round ball and 13 thou patch. I finished my day with my TC Hawken shooting 380gr Lee REAL boolit with .560 lubed fiber wad and 70grs Goex fffg. This load is absolutely amazing and really shows alot of potential. All loads were shot at 25 & 50 yards and with my Hawken I attempted some 100 yd groups but the wind picked up.
I should also mention that both bp guns are fitted with musket cap nipples. I am going out again tomorrow and this time I will remember to bring my camera. I was just too excited to get out and make some BOOM & SMOKE that I forgot a few other things like extra cleaning patches and musket caps. It was really great to get out and make my own booms and fire my bp gun at targets made of paper and be in the fresh outdoors and not smell crap, garbage and breathe "poop dust".
My plan is to use both these sidelocks this fall on deer & moose. Like I mentioned b4, from what the groups are showing, these bp guns are showing some mighty fine potential.
Cheers All and Thanks for reading,

Huntsman1  :)

Thanks for the excellent report and your service.  I'll try that load in my .54 Hawken.  I want to get a Lyman GPR too.  Let's see some pics.

I got a kick out of your line "breathing poop dust".  ;D I got my share of that in Africa about 40 years ago.

Well I never got a chance to get back out to the range as planned as the windy conditions just never died down enuf for my liking...darn prairies lol  ;D
So my wife and daughter and I ventured to the BIG city of Edmonton Alberta and we bought ourselves a 2010 Toyota RAV 4 ;D ;) :).
But I do promise that I will get some good range pics in the next couple of days ;).
"CoyoteJoe", its funny you mention Africa cause that looks like our next place of duty  :o

Hey Huntsman1,

Great to hear that you are home safe. It is much appreciated what you do for our country...So thank you very much.

My favorite big game calibre (Black Powder) is the .54...what a nice combination of energy, velocity and powder volume. A very efficient calibre.

Keep us posted on your efforts, I'm very interested.  8)

Ok, not quite my .54 but its my new just picked up this morning TC Cherokee .45. It may be hard to see/read the writing but its groups are on the left of the bull. The one shot dead center was from my Encore 209x50 and the one hole below the bull is from my GPR, range was 25yds.

OK here is the group I got with my GPR, 60grs volume Pyrodex RS ( I used the remainder of Goex fffg in my new Cherokee), .530 hand cast rb, CVA prelubed shooting patch, 25yds.

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT GUYS  ;)

Thanks Mark. I went out lastnite with my Cherokee and was shooting 50grs volume Pyrodex RS and cast rb and had 2 holes touching and one just shy (.5") of the group @ 50yds.
And with my GPR my groups with 80grs volume and rb were 3 holes touching @ 50yds  :o :o
