Should I make trade?
« on: November 21, 2003, 07:21:35 AM »
Here is a question for the forum...

Should I trade my .308 Winchester Varmit Special for a Tika T3 .270 WSM.
Primary use for this rifle would be deer hunting on open fields.

The current rife is without a doubt the most accurate gun I have ever owned. It will literally punch the same hole at 100 yards. The only down side is its weight. It must weigh 13 lbs with a scope attached.

Please give your feed back.

Thanks!

Jonr

Never get rid of an accurate rifle ----you'll regret it later----believe me.

See if the local dealer has a lay-away program----and get your T3 that way.

I would agree that you don't want to get rid of it.  I can't count how many times on these pages that I have read "...I was stupid and got rid of it..." or "...wish I hadn't gotten rid of that one..."  SO unless you wanna sing a sad sad song like these other folks keep it!!!

jonr,

Like the others have said, no matter what you N E V E R,  E V E R get rid of an accurate rifle.  It will come back to haunt you forever.  I did it once when I was young and to this day have regretted doing so.  Save your money or better yet drop hints on what you want for CHRISTmas.  Lawdog

That was a Winchester Heavy Varmit not a Varmit Special. The Varmit Special is the Remington variety. Thanks for all of the feed back so far.

Don't do it! The Winchester is a better designed rifle than the Tikka.

I would take a Tikka hands down.  But like the other guys said "never get rid of an accurate rifle" . . . unless you really just dont like it.  I too have been their and done that and it is something you dont want to do if possible.

I've only bought one rifle twice. That was my 338 Win Mag. It's a Model 70 SS Classic that will shoot an honest 7/16's of an inch groups with 250 gr Core-Lokt's. I sold it to buy another gun, but I just couldn't forget that it was the most accurate gun I'd ever owned. So, I bought it again.

Guns, mutter, mutter, mutter...

Obviously, I am enamored with the .308 Winchester.  I'm not a varmint hunter but I am assuming the barrel is of the heavy variety.  Since you are hunting over fields that are open, why not use a ground blind and then the weight of the gun isn't so significant anyway?  If you were going to be trekking into the back woods carrying the gun long distances, I could see the problem of the weight but if it were me, I'd hunt these open fields from the blind and use some sticks to rest on and take advantage of the familiarity I already had with the rifle as well as its' accuracy for the long shots you will likely encounter.  Beside these considerations, what is the availability of ammunition for the WSM and the difference in cost, etc.?  You're probably going to have this rifle for a long time to come, so these are valid considerations to mull over and, as many have stated, never rid yourself of an accurate rifle.

Don't listen to those other guys.

Get rid of it.

I'll buy it.

And in 6 months when you regret selling it, I might sell it back to you at a big premium.   OK?
